Overdue Hiker South Colony - Need Information

Post by pfiore1 »

If anyone on this site summited Crestone Needle on Monday August 20th or Crestone Peak or Humboldt on either Tuesday or Wednesday August 21st or 22nd please send me a private message. I won’t be able to check this account until later Sunday night but will get back to anyone who was up there when I am able. If you absolutely climbed either of these peaks on the provided dates and spoke to a solo male hiker 50 years of age on the route or summit then please call Custer County Search and Rescue at 719-783-0442.

Thanks, Pat

SAR teams have rescued a missing Richmond Virginia man in the North Colony Lakes area in Custer County.

Jeffery Jamison, 50, was reported missing Saturday morning after failing to return from a climbing trip in the area. He was last heard from via text message, on Wednesday August 22nd at approximately noon.

Approximately 30 volunteer rescuers from Custer County, Saguache County, Fremont County and the Western State Mountain Rescue Team assisted in the search, as well as the Custer County and Saguache County Sheriff Offices and the Wet Mountain Fire Protection District. Also assisting were the Colorado State Rescue Board, (CSRB), the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, (AFRCC) Cellular Forensics Specialists from Tyndal AFB, FL and the FBI Cellular Analysis Survey Team, as well as Flight for Life and a Blackhawk UH-60 from Buckley AFB out of Aurora Colorado.

Custer County Search and Rescue would like to remind back country users to carry the ten essentials and to always leave a detailed itinerary with a friend or family member and at your campsite. Include a comprehensive description of what clothing, including outer wear you are carrying, to aid rescue teams. Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) can also aid searchers in locating you quickly.

Props to SAR, again, for all of the great and selfless work that you all do.

The idea about leaving info on what you are wearing is a GREAT idea.

Wow, that's a not so small journey over to North Colony.

Good outcome. Well done, Pat, nat. guard, and the rest of CCSAR and other volunteers.

God bless you Pat and team. It must be a wonderful feeling to literally save a man's life like that.

Let's all learn from this man's mistakes. I can frankly see how even an experienced climber could descend the wrong way in disorienting weather. It has happened to others, sometimes with tragic results.

Glad he is ok..

"After reaching the summit, he got turned around and descended the north side of the mountain." That must have been some downclimb on the NORTH side??

I was thinking that maybe he descended on route to the saddle between Crestone Peak and East Crestone, and then turned and descended the Northwest Couloir route instead of the Red Gully. I remember the NW Couloir having red rocks and it looked like a steeper, looser version of the Red Gully. Just a thought. Regardless I am glad he is ok!
Climb the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.

No joke. Roach says the Northwest Col "has been the standard route for decades" noting that it's not the safest or easiest route. But it must be doable, obviously since he made it down I guess. That must mean he traversed over what google maps is calling "Bear's Playground" to get to North Colony. Quite the trek over the four or whatever days it was. Can't imagine.

Allegedly, he summited Crestone Peak, descended the northwest couloir to Bear's Playground, then descended the saddle into North Colony that is northwest of Humboldt's west saddle.
