Of course car thieves don't carry tools that would allow them to steal a car easily. Why the hell would they? I'm sure none of them actually drive to the trailhead with the intention of stealing cars that are left for hours and hours with no one watching. In fact, I'm pretty sure most car thieves are just out there at the trailhead with their trekking poles and backpacks, having a nice hike, and then all of the sudden decide to take a random stranger's car home as a bonus.

OP - did you leave a hide a key?

I like the debate about club or gun. To Jcole. He might have run the guy down and blasted him. Maybe a lucky hollywood shot from a mile away. Who are you to deny the impossible? Of course OP should have been packing.

England. A club? Yeah maybe. But what if the hide a key had both keys?

Polar just likes to start a fight for no reason.

How far up the road was this guy parked? I am more interested in how far a meth-head is willing to walk to steal a car. Pretty far from town, even if parked near the paved road. Let's hear more from you guys who live in Alamosa. Does the theory about adjacent landowners hold any water? I think another hiker who was tired on the way out just copped an easy ride. Or better yet, OP is pulling an insurance scam.

Can anyone say Jussey Smolette?

I live in Alamosa. I have hiked Como road/ Zapata Road 50+ times, and I have never had any issues with theft. I always leave a key in/around my car when I go into the Mountains because I usually don't carry a backpack and have no extra room for my keys.
Meth and Heroine is definitely an issue in the San Luis Valley, but it is not present in the mountains (at least that has been my experience). I find it super unlikely that a Meth addict stole the car.
I was surprised to hear about this, but I think the most likely case is that a local living near the Mountain took it due to where the car was parked. Some of the folks who live out there are kinda lame in my opinion. Unfortunately that area attracts some people who have little respect for others, or the environment around them.
The SLV is an amazing place, don't let this rare event stop you from enjoying the Sangres!

That is one of my worst nightmares on a hike. Sorry to hear this happened to you.

I can agree that it's a nightmare. I did a short hike once near the Springs, only gone for 2 hours. I left my medical bag in my car (I'm diabetic). I thought it was covered up but evidently it wasn't. I came back to a shattered passenger windshield and no insulin. So much for me trying to just day walk/hike with only a water bottle and a couple of snacks in my pocket ever again.

I hope the OP gets his possessions back. I'm glad he's okay. No shelter/supplies in winter in the mountains could have gone badly quite easily.

Vehicle anti-theft device. Very effective.
