I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread, but Bruce Tremper's, "Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain" is a good resource.

Conor, do you recall anything from them about capitalization?

+1 for mentioning Strunk & White.

+10 for the comedic genius, whether intentional or unintentional.

It was a gift from my professors, one of which at the time was the senate majority leader for the state of colorado. For an engineering only college, it was quite the oddball gift to give students who generally hated writing. Fortunately, it never got tossed and I picked it up many years later. Of course, the book is titled The elements of style. I'm sure grammar is somehow intertwined in there, but never really my interest. I always remembered the dollar word/penny word thing. Less so for style, more as I don't like coming off as a sesquipedalian. How's that for "comedic genius?" Can I get another +10?

CAIC has this "know before you go" program: https://www.avalanche.state.co.us/educa ... -colorado/

CMS is offering a free one hour online program: https://coloradomountainschool.com/prod ... ss-clinic/

CMC has Avalanche Terrain Avoidance for $40, might already be booked up: https://www.cmc.org/Classes/CMCClassesa ... afety.aspx

AIARE 1 would be nice in the future, but I don't have the money for it so that (and trips with higher potential risk) will wait for later and I'll certainly stick to more conservative stuff this winter.

Any other suggestions for places to start?
friends of berthoud pass. Some members here are volunteers and they run educational events a couple times a year.

+1 for tremper's book. Of course, the big takeaway will be to get an inclinometer.

There seems to be a few groups in which the “experts” get whacked at a disproportionately high number.
F1 drivers, BASE wingsuit flyers, and backcountry winter enthusiasts.
“The avalanche doesn’t care that you are an expert”, Atwater I believe.
Not trying to be flippant, just remembering the highly experienced folks that have perished in the Western US in the last few years. Don’t get complacent, be safe out there.

FWIW, I went to college and now make a living swinging something called a pulaski. I've taken a few avalanche awareness courses over the years and still had to google "heuristic traps," but I also had to google "Strunk & White" and definitely "sesquipedalian." I wish everyone well on their PhD theses*.
