Mt. Elbert in December

Post by stephenneal23 »

I'm looking to climb Elbert on 12/10 to bag my first winter 14er on my Birthday. I'll be climbing the East ridge and starting at the paved road. I almost summited about three years ago but had to turn back at the final ridge due to the windchill. I have bought new equipment since then and am ready to summit, but I think it best to bring someone. Will only cancel climb if a blizzard comes into the forecast, which is what happened two years ago.

Oh, Judd is the worst! :-D A guy can’t change his birthday. Mine is in February, so winter birthday summits all around. We’ll just add a “y” to this and call it “wintery” and maybe make that snowflake purple. Seriously though OP, I hope you get a taker or two and that you have a happy birthday on top of Colorado.

Correct you are, but it will still be cold and snowy 12 days preceding actual winter. Since you have already done a winter ascent of Elbert you can come and audit it yourself and tell me if it's actually like climbing it in winter proper.

December 1 through February 28 (or 29) is the real (meteorolical) winter. but it's just that the AMC decided to use astronomical winter (the silliest definition of winter that exists and one that the majority of the world smartly rejects) and the CMC decided to follow suit, so we're stuck with it for peak ascents.

To follow the "rules" for peakbagging, astronomical winter should still be used, even though it is a terrible definition, but anyone who uses that definition for any other purpose is off base.

December 10 is a meterogical winter ascent in the northern hemisphere, but not a calendar one.

Good luck on your meteorogical winter ascent Stephen. You might want to call it a 14ers.com gathering and people would likely come. Other trailbreakers are always good that time of year.

I have organized a few gatherings that tome of year and there has usually been a good turnout. Elbert is a reasonable choice as well. Just remember that the sun goes down earliest on December 7, so bring a headlamp with good batteries since there's a good chance that it will be dark when you get back.

I fixed a typo, but those who use the definition of astronomical winter as the real winter are of the same ilk of the Flat Earthers, though perhaps it's pointless to argue with them even though their viewpoints are ridiculous. The AMC, though since they developed the rule in the 1800s perhaps can be forgiven and if you want an official calendar winter ascent you should still follow the rule.

Back to the original topic though, I hope Stephen has a good birthday climb. I am doing something on that weekend and although I was hoping to do something I haven't done before, I might be interested in joining you if you're looking for company. Either way, good luck.
