2023 Goals

Post by angry »

Does anyone else feel like 2022 has flown by? Every year seems to get shorter.

Time to start thinking about goals for the new year ahead.

Mine:
1. 20 ski days
2. 15 bicents
3. 10 snowflakes
4. 5 trad alpine routes
5. 5 ice climbing routes
6. 1 international trip
7. Meet/hike with forum/IG friends

Looking forward to reading what you all have in the works!

Good timing, as I just finished my last hike for 2022 last week!

Some 2023 goals that make sense for me:

Finish the centennials (just need Hagerman, Trinity, and Jagged)
16 bicentennials (I have 32 left)
Gannett and some eastern U.S. state high points (I have 15 left)
5-10 more of the 57 ultras (I've done about half of them as of now)
California 14ers: Split, Williamson & Tyndall
Washington: Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Olympus, and/or Glacier Peak
Finish visiting all 63 national parks (just need Kobuk Valley, Gates of the Arctic, American Samoa, Shenandoah, New River Gorge, and Voyageurs)
Find partners for technical climbing, as I still have a lot to learn in this area

Re: 2023 Goals

Post by Scott P »

I'm going to mix up my generic goals a while in order to diversify a bit more. I'm actually going to set a goal to do less hiking and more biking and gym climbing. While the gym climbing goal might seem like a step backwards, 2022 was such a dismal failure in the technical climbing regard that it will be a good way to get some practice in. I'm also going to try getting more new summits in and cut down on the repeats when I can (though this gets harder as time passes since I have done most of the ones really close to home). I'll try to get some more out of state summits too.

Generic Goals for 2023

Total Hiking, Climbing, and Canyoneering Days = 320
Total Days Hiking, Climbing, Canyoneering, and Biking Days = 350
Summits Climbed = 150
New Summits Climbed = 60
States to Climb Summits in = 6
Countries to Climb Summits in = 3
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30
Gym Climbing Days = 30
Technical Canyons = 30
Biking Days = 30
Lose Weight in lbs. = 20 (currently at 268)

Plus this: Try not to get too riled up on people not knowing that calendar winter isn't a good definition of winter (even though it's the one used for official winter ascents) and people improperly identifying the Gore Range as well as people calling this extremely popular range "secret".

I'm going to call the below a Wish List, rather than a Goal. The reason is my Goal is to finish 50% of the below. It is extremely unlikely that I will finish all this, but my goal is 50%. Of course more will be added as the year goes on. As always, partners are welcome. (Gaps will be left every 50 to make it easier to reference while I'm updating).

1) Climbing: I've been working on a climbing project, the ranked Colorado 5th class peaks list, off & on for years. The list is actually a bit fluid with LIDAR, some new peaks pop on, older peaks fall off. It's now at the point, however, that I think it's getting pretty stable. I sat down and went through it and realized that I only have 7 peaks left (I don't count 4 of them because they are off limits, Native American reservation issues). So I'm now focused on knocking those 7 peaks off, which will require that I get back to 5.10 leading shape (ugh...but I've already started) and will also require a few prior recons to assess approaches, etc. A few of these peaks will be aid climbs, and while I'm so-so competent at aid, I need to brush up on those skills as well. A long way of saying that although there are only 7 key climbs, there will be lots of training climbs as well. A fun project for sure.

2) River stuff: I've committed to a trip down the Upper Colorado, about 60+ miles, probably in April/May. Might do a multi-day out to the Escalante in Utah, but that's not a high priority, might punt to 2024.

3) Various trips: I really want to camp in the Great Sand Dunes in May for a meteor shower. Might do a couple "mystery" overnighters, e.g. trying to find the mystery 4th class route on West Eolus, then drop into NY Basin for Peak 16. Another mystery is a peak rated either 4th class or 5.6. Huh? I also want to climb Peak L in the Gore with a buddy, I dropped the ball on that one last summer.

That's about it.

My goals are relatively straightforward. Ten 14ers left, 5 of them are more than Class 2. Go get those.

Maroon
Crestone
Sunlight (plus Windom)
Snowmass
El Diente

I wonder what Steamboat Rock goes at? The only route I have ever heard of is the Kor and that goes at 5.10+ A2+ and that's an old school rating and doesn't visit the summit. The north ridge is probably the easiest route, but looks gnarly. Either way, this one is likely way beyond my ability.

Scott -

I would welcome any possibility to hike Sunlight with someone since my current plan is just to take the train in and do Sunlight / Windom solo in mid-August. For me the train with a camp in the Basin is how I’d want to go. Even though I couldn’t get all 4 this past summer, that plan worked pretty well in getting the Eolus group.

It looks like I am going to (hopefully) barely squeak by to 100 new peaks for 2022. Thinking about my summer, I learned so much about how to live out of my car, plan days with lots of peaks, know when to rest, etc. I think I can be a lot more efficient next year. With that in mind, here are some mountain related goals I have for 2023:

1. 200 new peaks. I know it's possible just like thinking about what my daily/weekly/monthly averages would need to be in the summer, like currently just over 1/5 of my peaks in 2022 are from one calendar week. If I'm little more consistent in July and August than this year, it feels within reach.

2. Do more 13ers, I only did 18 this year. If I can start doing some of those big 13er links, 200 peaks is a lot more feasible.

3. Do a day with 10k feet of gain. I really should have tried this over the summer, I was probably in shape for it, but I'm definitely not at the moment.

4. Do as many peaks in a day as I can. Current PB is 8. This one is really more of a logistical challenge. There are so many "peaks" that don't have a ton of hiking involved. I think somewhere around 12 would be possible in the right area for me. In addition to this I'd like to break my monthly and weekly peaks PBs (24,18) (definitely necessary if I want to get to 200)

5. Do a 5th class peak. I had an opportunity to do cheeseman mountain the other day, but it was getting dark and I chickened out.

6. Explore more areas in Colorado, do more stuff in other states. I haven't been to the west elks, flattops, dinosaur natl. monument, etc. would be nice to see some of these places.

7. Boulder V8 indoors. I've got so close on a few 7s, hopefully with a whole year I might be able to send a soft 8

8. Hike with people more often

Oh no, it's not time for this already! :)

Keeping mine simple this year...

Finish the Bicents, 9 left and all are backpacks except Castlelebra.

1 international climb.

1 Cascades trip.
The summit is a source of power. The long view gives one knowledge and time to prepare. The summit, by virtue of the dizzying exposure, leaves one vulnerable. A bit of confidence and a dash of humility is all we get for our work. Yet to share these moments with friends is to be human. C. Anker
