Re: Routes with 10k vertical

Yay! 10k+ days are my favorite days! I love vert so much it hurts.

My Supra Benito already mentioned the Adams group loop in the Sangre

The John Cappis 50k in Silverton - a free fatass style race where you do all the route finding. It’s held around 4th of July each year by Eric Robinson and Ginny LaForme (legends). My track clocked in at 32.9 miles and 19,080 vert for the peaks around Silverton in 15.5 hours. So well under 24 to get your 10k day. I love this race and you can do it on your own time. The best part is that if you do it by yourself you can cut out sections of the course and still hit your 10k mark and you are close to town each time you come off peaks so it is easy to pick and choose here.

High Five 100 in Lake City - a free race that’s unmarked so you do all the route finding and gotta mostly support yourself, but you have to apply in January. That def takes more than 24 hrs but if you just do the first half of the course (only the 14ers half) and can work out a shuttle you will hit your 10k mark and get it under 24 hours.

Ouray Endurance Run… the 50 miler is very vertilicious if you’re down for that mileage. It is 51.9 miles and 23,582 ft of gain. Or just do it on your own time, it’s easy to rack up that vert by doing out-and-backs of the town trails starting Fellin park in the heart of Ouray.

The site has a downloadable gpx for both 50 and 100 milers

Telluride Mountain Run in August organized by my friend Jared Vilhauer. He does a phenomenal job with this race and it will get you over 10k and def under 24 hrs. The 24 miler is just shy of 10k but the 40 miler is 14,000 ft of gain.

The Cronin group loop that I did cuts it close but I think if I had added Mamma + Boulder it would have gotten to 10k. Probably better to do this route from the antero TH side for a better road and easier bail options.

I seriously LOVE 10k days but I also love coming back to home base and shoving my face with food for 30 minutes and going back out. So many of my days I’ve gotten those stats aren’t with single push loops but rather doing a bunch of things that day to add up to 10K. Another option to consider when trying to get that type of vert in.

A couple that I forgot until we got a rare post from the great Whiley:

"Precipice Peak, "Fortress Peak", and the 12ers across the valley, "U 4" (labeled 12,986 on maps) and 12,148 came out to 9,973 feet for me but who's counting? Some good scrambling on Precipice, Fortress, and especially 12,148.

Sheep Mountain C, 13,100, 13,681, Silver Mountain A, "Big Blue Peak", 13,051, 13,015, and 13,040 was "only" 9,500 (and about 30 miles) but you could probably find 500 feet somewhere, possibly by changing the order of the last three. Big Blue has probably the best views there are of Uncompahgre's spectacular north face.

Hayden Peak, "S 10", "S 9", "S 8", Ruffner Mountain, "S 7", and an out and back to Mears Peak from the Whipple trailhead was 11,000 by my watch but I think was ultimately less than that. Still felt like that much though and was probably around 10k. This is also the most serious route so far in the thread and contains endless scrambling and extreme exposure on horrendous rock, great distance, regain on the way out, and avalanche debris deeper than anyone is tall. Not a route to take lightly but if you want to get your ass kicked this will do it.

From the Wetterhorn Basin TH? Precipice from there isn't even 2500'. Our Precipice/Fortress combo was 4200' including a bunch of unnecessary vert trying a high traverse. Did you drop all the way back to the trail en route to Fortress? Just curious because I'm always disappointed in the low vert from that trailhead. EDIT - Never mind, you added 12,148.

And..

I'm getting just short of 25mi and 8k for my loop of the same. Caltopo does apply a gain smoothing algorithm, which I like because I think it prevents crazy inflation of stats based (at least up until recently) on inaccurate location, DEMs, and/or baro if going off your device.

Yup, I dropped back to the trail between Precipice and Fortress. The ridge didn't look doable and I figured the trail would be easier than bushwhacking across all the erosion gullies in between even if longer. Adding the two 12ers is what made the route even close to 10k.

It's likely my stats were inflated since I was using an older Fenix 5 Sapphire at the time (now a Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar that seems slightly more accurate). Whiley did the same loop about a month before me and came out around 27 miles and 8,600 vert tracking with her phone, which is closer to your numbers. Kind of crazy that eight 13ers in a day isn't more!
