Twin lakes Camping

Post by BKS »

My question is not where to camp near Twin Lakes, but how early do you have to get there on a weekend in high season (second weekend of June) to secure a larger spot for 4-5 tents? Is Thursday evening soon enough? I'm thinking the various spots around South Elbert TH/Forebay res. Or, what about the first come first serve NFS spots like Parry Peak/Twin Peaks, or even Halfmoon road (dispersed) or Turquoise Lake NFS sites? I know the limitation on number of people, vehicles, tents on NFS sites.

I just haven't camped in these popular spots on busy weekends since COVID. Is one likely out of luck if they show up during the day on Friday?

If it helps, I drove by Parry Peak CG Saturday morning ~6.30 and Monday noon-ish and there were plenty of empty sites, which for Memorial Day weekend surprised me. The summer crowds don't seem to have hit this one yet this year so mid-June may still be light traffic? The dispersed sites by Elbert may be more popular given the draw of the peak.

Friday morning is usually early enough to get a dispersed camp spot around the South Elbert trailhead.

Pro tip - there are tent camping spots at the Dexter Point (tent campground), which is at the boat ramp on the NE side of the lake. There are almost always spots available if you get there before late Friday afternoon and it's first-come first-serve, not reservable. $10 to park, I think. Even if you can't get a site, you can probably sleep in your car at the Dexter Point parking area.

Edit: $22 is the camping fee. $10 is if you are just parking there.
