The catch is you have to wait until August 2045. It looks the totality path will cross around 40 of the Colorado 14ers. I heard this on the radio today. People are making plans.

Re: total solar eclipse on a 14er
It's a long way off, but the mountains will be ridiculously crowded on that day.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Here is a better map: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2045-august-12
All the 14ers in the Sawatch, Elks, TenSquito, Sangres (except Culebra....can you imagine the solar eclipse markup???) and Front Range (except Longs) will be in the path of totality, along with a good chunk of the San Juans. I will be 51 in 2045 but I still plan to watch it from the top of one of the Bells or Pyramid. Totality starts at ~10:30 AM, and it's the middle of August, so the conditions for viewing should be excellent. Pick any of the hard/scary 14ers and there probably won't be many people up there. The easy ones, on the other hand, will be wild. I bet Pikes Peak is literally 26 miles of bumper to bumper traffic. Half of Denver will be on Grays Peak.

Hey Onion, the 2045 eclipse passes right over Salt Lake City! You can probably charge up to $2,500 for people to stay on your property for viewing, but I know you’ll let me stay there for free, right?

Re: total solar eclipse on a 14er
Yeah everything about that 2045 eclipse sounds horrible (in terms of logistics). I think I disagree with you about the hard 14ers being low crowds. My hunch is that almost any mountain in the path of totality will be insane. Who knows what the road system will look like in 21 years but if it were this summer, traffic afterwards would be pure gridlock almost everywhere, even off the beaten path.jfm3 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 5:06 pm Here is a better map: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2045-august-12

I’ll be 76 then but just like the one in 2 weeks, I’ll likely sit it out. The experience I had in 2017 in Wyoming was so amazing, so perfect that for me, I don’t think it can ever be replicated & I don’t even want to try. Some things, like graduations, sports championships or finishing a mountain checklist can fall short of expectations; Wyoming in 2017 was the complete opposite, it exceeded what I expected. By a wide margin. Hopefully everyone who sees the upcoming one, and the 2045 event, enjoys it as much as I enjoyed the 2017 eclipse.
There’s one in 2099 that will pass directly over my original hometown of Milwaukee. But I don’t think I’ll be around to see that one.

Re: total solar eclipse on a 14er
Won't have to worry about crowds.
The mountains are further than 15 minutes away and if you don't have a permit to leave your assigned zone then your electric car won't start anyway, much less auto drive you there.
Maybe you could ride a bike but you'll be too weak from eating manufactured fake meat and insects to put up much of an effort.

THREAD HIJACK ALERT:
Sure, 2045 for anyone thinking past the "electric car" age. But what about next month?
Who has plans for viewing the April 8, 2024 eclipse? I will be in Texas, location undisclosed, except to say strategically located on the center line near maximum totality duration.

Re: total solar eclipse on a 14er
My uncle has a farm south of Carbondale, Illinois, in the path of totality. Maximum totality up to 4:28 is in Texas but they will still get 4:09 in southern Illinois. I’m planning on going but will be checking the weather before I drive 1,100 miles. They get a lot of rain in the spring and no use going if there is a 90% chance of cloud cover.

Well, there’s still that Super Bowl XLV you to account for. But nothing a bushel of green onions or a fully loaded margarita machine can’t resolveJROSKA wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 5:51 pmHey Onion, the 2045 eclipse passes right over Salt Lake City!
