"New Spot per Month Challenge - 2024!"

Post by jibler »

Yes folks it is true - after a year off the challenge has been re-ignited! This one is going for the full spread too - Jan->Dec. (although 2022 was considered calendar year technically, march 22>feb 23 finish)

Bagged an important one to kick off too - Warren Peak.

January is my traditional offseason for a reason - was unnecessarily miserable after leaving deer creek park. Including slide factor on wet grass under snow descending warren that was hyper hazardous. its a tangle back in there.

Also taking a moment to rejoin my call to arms! Cardgenius was nearly lined up to acccompany me - and in fact i was just overcome by peak conquest fever otherwise i shoulda waited. But I am trying to form up some locals here to help me raise the bar in my 2024 game. This happens every year- that the upcoming season could well be the best ever because i have this disturbingly long list of stuff to do still:

longs pikes blanca ouray holy cross eagles nest.

OK here is updated bracket showing my off current action thru jan 2024 - including last year's well deserved 'off year'

Image

Don't forget some of that simple action in the middle of summers are from smoky ass wildfire years. I started to think that was going to be every year. it better not return this year.

And this action is heating up people. And I am possibly formally inviting you? 2024 is potentially a huge breakout mountaineering year and one that will require teamwork.

But -- I am no longer going to bump that social thread in the companion thread department. Yet it did get cardgenius on the team now and maybe you're next.

And let the history books always recall -- I kicked a new phish show at every new hike I took in 2022 (and January / February 2023 -- thus creating the first full year cycle)

sorry folks - this is long overdue.

because cardgenius and I got up Berrian Mountain on superbowl sunday!!

was right after snowfall and was unique cool day up there.

Image

Blue Sky is right up in your face. Pic doesn't convey. Much more so than even nearby legault.

Image

and god love cardgenius as he likes busting around in the s**t just like me - we went fully monty and crossed over berrian to the southern rocks

which provided this awesome profile pic of Legault actually

Image

and he even put up with my continuing quest to listen to new phish jams on these new hikes - clocked in some 12/31/23 i had been keeping in vault for this day.

Crescent could be next for march?? Stay tuned.

OK OK - I'm getting bombarded with Private Messages wondering what's going on with the 2024 new spot challenge.

There was another February chapter actually - I managed to get up to Bergen Peak in evergreen on leap day. That's one of my fav days and cool to connect to something new.

Image

But - truth be told - for that march chapter I lead Cardgenius and me a bit astray. Some poor game planning/navigation lead us into some grey country. Mission not accomplished...

and I even later that month in desperation tried to test the boundary of 'newness' by hitting Mount Carbon there in lakewood. Didn't cut it either. (i've never been to bear creek lake park period before - not bad but chatfield better)

and april woulda not been much better but for quick play early on to hit up Bluff Park up there near daniels park - kinda barely clocked in but at 3 miles that is the league minimum to qualify for 'new spot'

Image

never nevertheless - pumped for May. Last year I was on a friggin peak (with relatively dry feet) on like may 15th so I wanna get in the game quick this May.

ok this one is dedicated to cardgenius - for extended reasons not to be mentioned

but I did get myself down to the Air Force Academy finally a few weeks ago to get after that Eagle Peak.

and i got to say - I had the perfect visitbility because a lot of the deep field views there seem like they'd be marginally in view on even good days.

Image

Image

but yeah - this shot here - this was the true "eagle vision" - I have never seen silverheels or the sawatch while still being on the Front Range.

Image

field notes: I had thought i could bust around to the lower peak and maybe even return via a stanley canyon looperoo but the brush in general thicker than anticipated. could be done but would not be a casual outing.

you know this thread is serving as my defacto social hiking thread people - this is the biggest tent imaginable if you want to join the crew for local hikes. Buffalo peak in lost creek may be good target soon.

OK yes got up Peak One today.

And can I just say glorious?? I had put this off for like 20 years - and getting it on the edge of the winter season made for extra drama up there.

Note how this Ptarmigan blends into the environment!

How did you climb Warren? Very nice pano shot from the top. Took me a minute to finally pick out Goat Mountain, Flat Top. Years ago I did a nasty bushwhack from Goat to Warren across that deep drainage. It was one of the hardest things I ever did. I've thought about doing it again, but always talk myself out of it.

We have climbed a lot of the same mountains. Big and small, you've done them all!

When you go do Eagle's Nest, send me a message. I'd love to tag along.

let the record show i responded to boudreaux via PM

but let record also show i nearly published trip report about peak one - partially because it was just that great - and also because from what i see it has never been the sole subject of a report?

actually - i meant to pick up some photos of the 'alice in wonderland' section in trees just below that hut - it was super cool weaving between the trees near treeline with the solid'ish snowpack providing good support.

alas - i didnt' take any pics on way up and on the way down i got way off trail. quite annoyingly so actually. hard to actually get lost there but i nearly tried.

Jibs - only you can create a record that shows you nearly did something! Ha! And don’t get lost either!!
