I hope to get up three new state high points: Tennessee, North Carolina and Hawaii.....oh, and maybe Nebraska :P
Here at home I plan to chip away at my 20 or so remaining BiCents. I have never been to Ice Lakes after all these years, peaks there are high on my list.
Also hope to get a second trip to the San Juans to hike the peaks around Mt Silex.
Finish up the Elks on Clark.
Get up the newly named Mt Blue Sky via Chicago Lakes including a camping night with the kids.
Help my daughter find a Ptarmigan for her big birding year.

Post by Scott P »

Well, the year is 1/3 of the way over. 2024 has 8 months left to go. I hope you are doing well with your goals so far.

I have gotten out every day so far and haven't missed a day yet in 2024, but my lack of technical climbing has been dismal. Kessler (my son) hurt his knee skiing last winter so has been out for the count.

I'm not the best technical climber, but love to get out. Let me know if you'd be interested. After next week I'll be working in Granby and it will last through August so if anyone is interested in that area, let me know. I'd be happy to get out with anyone interested.

Generic Goals for 2024

As of April 30:

Total Hiking, Climbing, and Canyoneering Days = 350-Currently at 121. I haven't missed a day yet this year. :-D
Total Days Hiking, Climbing, Canyoneering, and Biking Days = 360-Currently at 121. I haven't missed a day yet this year. :-D
Summits Climbed = 150-Currently at 72. I am ahead of schedule. :-D
New Summits Climbed = 60-Currently at 26. I am ahead of schedule, but since I'll be working in Granby this summer and public access peaks are limited where I'm working now (Aguilar), I don't think I'll exceed the goal by much, but might bet lucky. :-D
States to Climb Summits in = 6-Currently at 4 (Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma). Considering that it's January, I am ahead of schedule. I'll be visiting Oregon, Wyoming, and probably Idaho this summer as well. :-D
Countries to Climb Summits in = 1. An odd goal perhaps, but my goal this year is actually to stay in this county and only visit this one. It will be the first time I have done so in a long time. :-D
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10-Currently at 0. I am way behind schedule and haven't done any. Does anyone out there want to do some. Please? :(
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30-Currently at 3. I am way behind schedule. Does anyone out there want to do some. Please? :(
Gym Climbing Days = 30-Currently at 1. Since I'm working out of town most of this year I likely won't make this one or come close. :(
Technical Canyons = 30-Currently at 5. I am behind schedule and considering the places I am working this one might be tough to get this year. :(
Biking Days = 30-Currently at 2. I'm not in a big hurry for this one, but I do need to get on my bike this year. and am building a bike trail in Granby! :(
Lose Weight in lbs. = 20 (currently at 262)-I haven't weighed myself yet. I hope I didn't gain weight. It's hard to eat healthy when you're on the road all the time. :(

Do any of the above look interesting to anyone out there? I could use some partners. For technical routes, I'd be open to joining others on climbs of their choice as well.

As far as specific trips I could use partners for I have a permit to camp near Hiamovi Tower in the Indian Peaks August 16-17. Does anyone want to do the technical route on this one? I have the permit.

I wouldn't mind doing some technical cragging around Granby either if anyone is in the area and interested.

It's also couloir season, or close to it. Does anyone want to do some cool couloir climbs?
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

I'm realizing I didn't jump in on this thread yet (and don't recall if I did for last year's).

So here are a handful:

-re-establish a regular running habit. (I did do a heavy trail marathon and heavy half and normal half last year but haven't been consistent)
-complete my grad degree and successfully defend my thesis
-become gainfully employed full-time again (life has been interesting with grad school abroad...nobody likes hiring immigrants, it turns out)
-summit Triglav in Slovenia
-summit Galdhoppigen in Norway (done as of last week)
-visit 5+ new-to-me countries (have visited 2 so far)
-see Taylor Swift in concert (yes, I can fight)
-have 10+ more newspaper contributions published
-do at least one 13er
-do at least one 14er
-really trying to get another book contract

Type I fun

Hiking: I finished the fourteeners September 2nd, so I had all the rest of September and then most of October to (re)visit some nice, boring, scenic trails up nice, boring, scenic peaks like Mt. Audubon and Huron. Those were great! I remembered that I actually like hiking, so more Class 1-2 exploration/revisitation is high priority:

1. Lots of trails in RMNP I haven’t seen yet plus several I want to see again on the west side of the Park in particular
2. Also spending more time in National Parks that aren’t RMNP
3. Trying out segments of the CT/CDT closest to home (probably as section hikes…I sleep better in my car than on the ground)

All still TBD, although I did get to do some skiing in Hidden Valley just after that March snowstorm.

Skiing: My real priority in having fun! After two years having to do everything in my old resort boots because the swelling in my ankle lingered for a long time after I fell off Pyramid, I finally have a somewhat normal-sized foot and ankle again, and that plus those old resort boots literally falling apart meant I had to switch to a full-on backcountry setup over the summer…and I love it! Already excited to get out more with it.

4. Resort days…got to 100 last year, but that was easy because it started snowing early at Steamboat and kept snowing somewhere or another on one of my passes. I’m not sticking to a specific number of days because it is already apparent that this year is not last (😭), but I do intend to take advantage of uphill access where I can (and where it’s free), and I want to continue taking advantage of days at some of the fancier resorts on my passes (Aspen, Jackson, Big Sky, Taos).
Finally used all my available Aspen days for the first time, though I didn't do any skiing out of state...ah well. Better for the checking account, I suppose. Took plenty advantage of the uphill access, though!
5. More backcountry days in general…Berthoud Pass is great, and there are so many other passes that would be good training and fun skiing (or at least, funner than hiking back down).
Got at least one in every month of the year so far!
6. More fourteeners! I’d be open to thirteeners, too, I guess, but there are sooooo many of them. Controversial opinion ‘round these parts, I know, but fourteeners are way more interesting to me.
Two new fourteeners - Bierstadt and Sherman - and one new thirteener in Peak 8. Guess I do have some fondness for thirteeners that are accessible from ski resorts once said resorts are closed.
7. Keep up my at-least-one-day-of-skiing-per-month goal…going strong since October 2021, and now I know about summer options outside of St. Mary’s!
Still going strong, though July will be a little more difficult this year than it was last year in terms of finding good snow.

Type 2 fun

I was so ready to be done with lists after I finished the fourteeners, but let’s be real here: if you’ve got the sort of mental health issues - er, determination - to power through the fourteeners even after your ratio of anxiety to excitement about them is 1 gazillion:0, the only way to cut lists out entirely is probably via a several-month inpatient treatment program, and ain’t nobody got the time or money for that. So instead, here are a couple at least semi-reasonable sounding checklists I can work on at my own pace:

8. Front Range Bicentennials, named, ranked, and otherwise. Still need Bald, Bard, Rosalie, Sawtooth, “SE Longs,” and “West Blue Sky” (or so I assume is its new name). Most are Class 1-2, so maybe I’ll actually enjoy those??
Bard was fun from Parnassus!
9. State high points. Kings actually sounds fun to me, and others I could theoretically ski down, so maybe some legit fun to had there as well???

Paying forward

I’ve thought it would be cool to give back in some way for some time, but I haven’t signed up for anything formal because I wanted to keep my schedule as clear as possible for when the perfect weather window came up on some hideous fourteener I still needed. Now that that phase of my life is over, time to be less selfish with my time in the mountains:

10. Volunteer as a peak steward with CFI. I think I’d be worse than useless at trail work with all those injuries in various stages of recovery (or lack thereof), but I can tell people everything they need to know about Bierstadt, Grays/Torreys, and Quandary!
Gotten one shift in on Bierstadt so far, looking forward to more.
11. Help my friends get closer to their checklist goals. This might mean playing Yente for them - hooking them up with other friends who are also looking to (re)do various peaks I would very much like to never go anywhere near again - but there are quite a few I wouldn’t mind checking out for the first or repeat time(s).
Managed to pair off two friends for Capitol and KC/Challenger...I'll join for the backpacking part of both but am looking forward to living vicariously through their reports of the scrambly parts.
12. If anyone I haven’t already discussed skiing with (or even I have) wants to get some laps in on the slopes before skimo season starts, PM me!
Did not manage to ski with anyone new this past season, but next one starts in October.

Off-mountain

I put a lot of the rest of my life on hold the past couple years so I could get serious about finishing. I’m now out of excuses for my creative drought.

13. Start filming again. I have an idea for a feature-length film, though some of it will have to wait for warmer weather. I also have a couple short ideas I could shoot in enough time to maybe submit to festivals in 2024.
Haven't ruled this one out completely, but see #14...
14. Start writing/audio-recording some of my fourteener stories to see if there’s a wider audience for them, i.e., maybe some payoff to all the suffering i did in pursuit of that list…?
Feeling pretty good about this one so far! I'd estimate I'm 50,000-60,000 words into this project so far, which is novel-length, so it's been kinda consuming all my creative energy for a while and will probably continue to do so for another while to come, but at least writing about fourteeners has been more enjoyable than actually climbing several of them!

Hmmm. Maybe I’ll be making it a 2025 and Beyond goal to never get specific about my goals again. :P
Or to make an added 2024 goal to have the most exhaustive post of the thread, because I think I may have succeeded.

madmattd wrote: Sat Dec 02, 2023 9:28 pm This worked well for me in 2023 (crushed most of my goals), so I guess I should try it again!

General Goals:
(10) new ranked 13ers 2 so far. Just getting started on that part of the year!
(5) new ranked 14ers 1 so far. Lots of plans in the air for more!
(4) snowflake ranked summits >13k Check! 6 14ers, 1 13er between Jan 1 and the start of Spring.
(6) nights on trail (backpacking) 5 thus far - 4 of those in Canyonlands which was awesome!
400mi hiking 183.5mi so far logged. On pace.
125k vert 57k ytd. A little off pace but not by much.
Continue working on my C3/+ experience Nebulous goal, but one C3 summit in the books so far with lots more in play.

Specific Goals:
Chicago Basin trip - 4 14ers + Jupiter in a perfect world This one may not happen this year due to scheduling conflicts, but still a chance late season.
Snowmass Revenge (or at least attempt) CHECK!
Crestone Peak Being discussed.
Attend Fall, Winter gatherings.

Other Outdoorsy Goals:
100mi BCXC skiing Got in 118mi over 11 ski days this winter.
1000mi on the bike 246mi so far. Got off to a slow (lazy) start this year.
Stretch goal: run a half marathon I can't seem to run any distance without major shin pain anymore, so seems very unlikely. I'll be happy to get back to running 2-3 5Ks/week without pain again.

Try switching shoes; to something that is fundamentally different from what you are using now. I switched to the Hoka Anacapa; the are very cushioned, especially including under the mid foot (which makes them pretty different from most shoes). Fortunately, i did that switch when my plantar fasciitis was still mild.

I got some good arch supports from Good Feet. Somewhat expensive but worth it.
