The latter is the most important. The former usually comes naturally, but it's a good idea to learn to test handholds.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

See above.

With poor route finding a class 4 route quickly becomes an unprotected Class 5.
And the descent or retreat is worse and difficult, so you keep pushing on hoping to make it to the top so you can take the correct path down.

Been there.
