I'm just glad I don't live in a trailer.

^ "with no public travel allowed"

The article is not clear:
Not even hiking off the road ?

OK, it says:
"The closure encompasses a 1.15-mile stretch of road that ends at Kite Lake"

How far off the road do I have walk to avoid a $5,000 fine ?

Here's the actual order from the FS: https://www.fs.usda.gov/sites/nfs/files ... losure.pdf
National Forest System Road 8 is located in the vicinity of the Kite lake Trailhead and is approximately 1.15 miles in length and 20 feet wide from the center of the road on each side . The road begins approximately 1 mile south of Kite Lake and ends at its intersection with the Forest Service Boundary

UPDATE: The closure start date has been pushed back to 9/1/2025

And to be clear, you can't walk on or next to the road during this closure. The peaks are not "closed" but if you are determined to hike these peaks this September - November, pick a different starting point. Since the Mineral Park/Windy Ridge Bristlecone area is public the road up to the saddle between Bross and Cameron could be used as a starting point in September, although that would make for a much longer hike to get the loop. After that, it's likely to be snowed in.
