Take the train, it’s part of the experience. There are plenty of camping spots in Chicago Basin.
Yes, you are not committed to returning on a given day, but note, not all trains stop at Needleton. Check the schedule ahead of time.
As others said, no free beer. You can bring beer and they will stow it in the backpack car. I put a case of beer in a mesh bag in the Animas for when we got back. I thought I hid it well, even covered it with a bunch of rocks so that it was sunk a couple feet down. Some A$$hole must have searched for it to find it, and took about half of them. No, the beers did not escape the mesh bag on their own, it was sturdy and secure. Guess they could have taken them all, but still a jerk move.

Depends, if I had caught the person in the act of drinking my beer they would have paid dearly and ended up with summer teeth.ORION wrote:Dan_Suitor posted:So your saying that, with a little work, there is free beer. Some A$$hole must have searched for it to find it, and took about half of them.

I've never taken the train; however, after hiking in from Purgatory, I don't think I would do it differently. The hike up from the Animas kind of sucks on the way out, but it is a very easy and beautiful hike in. I'll be hiking in for Pigeon and Turret. I think it comes down to whether or not you enjoy putting in hiking miles; if not, take the train. Or if you carry a heavy pack, maybe take the train.

Id say go as late as you can. Late fall. The Basin is way over crowded. Every where you look there is human waste. Watch your step. Train from Silverton is the best. Its a shorter ride. I just got out of there last week.
