You can over to Bear Canyon from Shanahan Ridge. Bear Canyon will likely have some ice in it, though (being narrow/deep). Once you get out of the canyon, though, it should be a bit drier.

This is correct as far as it goes, but:

-That's the long way up Green for sure - not prohibitively so (a little less than 6 miles from the Shanahan trail head to the summit of Green), but something to consider
-As of Saturday, it was snow covered (but no ice) most of the way up Bear Canyon & then over to and up Green. Actually trail conditions were pretty good - not much ice. No idea what a few more days of melting/freeze will bring
-If you want to do Bear Peak but want to avoid Fern Canyon you can go up Bear Canyon but then go left rather than right at the junction. No idea conditions past the junction toward Bear Peak though.

Yes. They are still working on a couple of access trails east of NCAR, but Bear Canyon is open.

Chapaquatta sounds more welcoming anyway. I would prefer to spend my time there.

now i'm seeing these rocks on green mtn referred to as "sacred cliffs" ?

like the sound of that -

for having not been - is it potentially cooler to go to green mtn than bear?

thx

Sacred Cliffs is... cliffy. Some use trails to the west and some scrambling if you want to stay near the ridge. Probably slow going in the snow. Lots of tunnels. A few arches and passageways. One of my favorite places.
