Bethie, why don't you try the Rainbow Trail in the Sangres? You could do an out and back along the entire trail I bet. Yes, the streams are running high, but the trail should be dry the entire length providing there are bridges crossing all those drainages. There is a lot of ATV/Motorcycle traffic on this trail though. I guess I answered my own question that it may not be the perfect wilderness experience.

stephakett- Talked to ranger. South San Juans are a no go.
boudreaux- Yeah for our friends first time visiting CO we are trying to give them a super scenic awesome trip. Plus everything they have planned after is in Creede, Crested Butte, Aspen & ending in Leadville to climb Elbert before they fly home. So we are trying to find something kinda nearby since our original plan was to be in the San Juans. Think we will camp in cool areas & take them on some classic hikes. Thanks for responding though!!

The snotel sites around the La Garita wilderness look promising, and it's a great area to spend some time in. Someone just posted a conditions report for San Luis so you could check with them as well as the ranger station. Also conveniently located next to Creede.

Stephakett - Black Canyon would work for your trip. That's a beautiful area. Be careful of the poison ivy!
Weve already let go of backpacking & are doing day hikes from all diff areas in SW Colorado.

Wise decision probably with all the reports starting to surface of the terrible avalanches and massive debris down there.
