Not sure about the policy from digging old threads, but I'm trying to see what's the current info on parking in pull-off or the the small parking lot before Summit Lake (i.e. is the reservation required).

Since it’s a state highway, you don’t need a permit to park in an established road pull-off in an area where no amenities are provided. This includes the small pull-offs below and above Summit Lake as well as those down the road from the summit parking lot.

Does this mean I can enter the road before 8am without a reservation, park in one of the pull outs near summit lake and hike to the summit without any issue?

This is mostly the case for those doing Bierstadt's East Ridge from the pull-off below the Evans summit.
I was up there doing Gray Wolf a couple of weeks ago. I was very surprised to see the amount of “squatters” in these pull-offs on my way out. I purchased the $7 summit lake evening reservation, and got back right as dark set in. These cars were either abandoned, or had people oddly sleeping in their vehicles. I have nothing against “van life” just wanted to give people a heads up they’re not always full (even at night).

Suggestion: do Evans west ridge from Guanella pass. Just be aware of big moose in the willows area
