Re: My 14er record attempt
I doubt there are very many -- if any -- Olympic marathoners who could do what Homie just did.
EDIT: This is not meant to slam Olympians (who are a thousand times the athletes I have ever been or ever will be), but simply to try to put into perspective the sheer athleticism of what guys like Homie and Cave Dog do.

Re: My 14er record attempt
Today's target splits:
3:00 - depart BV trailhead
3:40 - summit Fairplay (brief stop for pepperoni pizza)
4:10 - Twin Peak / Whale Peak saddle
4:45 - Crow Hill summit
5:10 - Crow Hill/Denver saddle
5:40 - arrive Denver trailend
It's interesting they chose the Kenosha-Crow Hill route. It's less driving but more elevation gain.

Homie it was a great run you gave it all you had but, this just goes to show how impressive Cave Dog's record is. Some say it may never be broken.

Wow, all I can say is that I have the utmost respect for Homie and Cave Dog. Amazing record, amazing attempt, amazing bad-assery. This has been an exciting chase to follow, and really brought a lot of attention to the activity we all love (at varying speeds).

Re: My 14er record attempt
Now, now, let's not get carried away with dissing Jerry Rice and Michael Jordan.
These comparisons of Michael, Jerry and olympic marathoners to Homie's endeavor show a lack of understanding of athletics -- you don't compare apples to oranges. All great athletes -- whether paid or not -- should be respected.
edit: misspelled Jordan. Geeze. If I lived in Chicago, I'd be dead by now.

I laughed, I cried, I leered, and I cheered... and in the end, I am so thankful there are still people like you out there in the world, Homie.
Now go on home to the only folks who think even more highly of you than your friends on 14ers.com: your wife and kids - tonight, the proudest family in Colorado!

Too soon? Maybe, but having watched your play by play analysis I laughed. Something tells me if Homie left his SPOT on some of us would keep this up for months. My bet is he'd find it all pretty damn funny as well. Go Homie Go!jdorje wrote:Today's target splits:

Re: My 14er record attempt
Just got home and had to check in immediately. My suspicions were confirmed. After reading Eric's report from last night of Homie having issues with bending his leg, I was wondering if his body was finally putting its foot down (pun intended) and saying enough is enough. Then with the (relatively) longer time going up Yale this morning I was suspicious. I haven't read through all the pages since the announcement so hopefully this won't all be a verbatim repeat of other posts:
Homie - I have to say this has been an absolutely awe inspiring, unforgettable week of watching tracks and imagining where you were (having been many of these places myself) and being unable to imagine how it must feel to keep going and going. Nothing but respect for you, Homie (and consequently, Cave Dog). You gave your all and riveted and inspired an entire community of climbers, hikers and others with varying degrees of understanding of what you were actually accomplishing out there. Wow! Just wow. I believe I speak for the community in saying that even though many (most) of us don't even know you, it has been an absolute thrill to follow you this past week and that the most important outcome that I wanted was to see Homie coming home safely. Thank you for initially posting here to let us know your plans; thus allowing us to join you on your adventure. The posts by your support team including your wife just made everything all the more exciting and interesting. This week also confirmed my suspicions about Spot reliability.
Thank you to the support crew for all your hard work, dedication, selflessness and obvious friendships. I'm sure this entire epic attempt will not soon be forgotten. Now, Homie, I pray that you will fully recover from your injuries and though I'm sure it is disappointing not to have broken this incredible record, that you will have no regrets. It looks like you have made outstanding decisions until the end. Well done, Homie!

John Prater -
I want to say congratulations on your quest. I also want to say thank you. You've been an inspiration to me, you don't know me but you've made me remember the person I was years ago with your quest and for that I thank you.
Your ordeal has touched a lot of people deeply. I'm headed back to the high country this weekend to remember who I used to be and hopefully still can be because of you.
I'll buy you a steak dinner and a good beer if you ever make it out to Grand Junction.

Re: My 14er record attempt
Congratulations to Homie on a simply amazing week of climbing and endurance. Truly phenomenal and a real display of discipline and guts.
To all those dissing on Jordan and Rice, though -- they're phenomenal athletes in their own right. There's no need to bring them down to bring up what Homie has done here. They engaged in competitive sports with an opponent, whereas Homie was battling the elements and his own body. Different set of skills and different imperatives. They're all tougher than I'll ever be, and more accomplished than I can ever imagine. Kudos to all who work this hard and achieve so much.
