On 6/11/18 a porcupine chewed on wiring every 30 minutes all night at Hancock Lake TH in the Sawatch. I had decided to sleep in my truck instead of get my tent out so I was able to chase it off each time. No sleep, but still got my summits and didn’t have a disabled truck.

I had a problem with a porcupine chewing on my wiring at the Stewart Creek TH on San Luis. It kept me up all night. I even drove a 1/4 - 1/2 mile down the road and it found me again about 90 minutes later.

Anyone who has had issues with porcupines or marmots, did any of you have a skid plate under your vehicle? I have never had issues, but wonder if the skid plate has deterred them.

I have caught two marmots, two incidents, where they squeeze in over the skidplate. Like mice they can get in through openings smaller then they are. Main areas area where people camp and feed the critters. So far about 600$ total to fix their damage. Silverton environs is a biggie, even as far as Kite Lake trail heads. Been thinking about shooting at them with birdshot, or better yet improving my skills with a slingshot! If you park, wait a while and if you see one soon, beware.
...let me remind you of the pilgrim who asked for an audience with the Dalai Lama.
He was told he must first spend five years in contemplation. After the five years, he was ushered into the Dalai Lama's presence, who said, 'Well, my son, what do you wish to know?' So the pilgrim said, 'I wish to know the meaning of life, father.'
And the Dalai Lama smiled and said, 'Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?'

Nine years ago, marmots went after the wiring in my Tacoma at the end of a 4X4 road above timberline near Silverton. I read several solutions to avoiding marmot damage in the responses, but the one that works for me is coyote urine spray. I have a spray from a hunting supply store, and it is very rancid and strong smelling. My understanding is some are more potent than others - get the strongest you can find.
