Winfield Access

Post by Alpine Guy »

Anyone been up to Winfield lately - can I get up there in a Jeep Cherokee? Looking to hike La Plata on Sunday. My wife and I drove from Denver to Montrose just before New Years and there was very little snow west of Vail but definitely snow around the Divide.

We had five vehicles in and out of Winfield Dec. 21/22.
Road had about half a foot of snow, deeper in some spots, but wheel tracks were fine.
Not sure how much it has snowed up there since.

Why not do La Plata via the standard route with the winter variation? It's accessible year round, and far safer avalanche-wise.

Sounds like the mountains are getting some new snow so I'll stick to the foothills this weekend.
