Mt Elbert to Mt Massive

Post by 7summitsoflupus »

Hey guys, wanted to find out if there is a connecting trail for these two peaks and if so, can this be a single day hike? Heading out in June to tackle Grays-Torreys, Massive and Elbert. Any input appreciated.

If you pull up the route page for either mountain you can see that the trailhead/starting point for the standard routes for each are not that far apart (about 250 yards). So up and down Massive, then up and down Elbert. To separate hikes. That would be a pretty massive day with over 20 miles RT and 10k + elevation gain. If you were doing both in the same day you would be better off doing the Southwest slopes route on Massive which is a few miles away from the standard route but cuts about 1,000ft and a few miles RT off the length, then driving back up the road to Elbert standard East Ridge route TH.

Honestly, doing both of those in a single day is probably a bit much, and miserable for most people.

I actually did that a couple years ago I started on massives southwest slopes route at 12:30 am, lost a little bit of time doing route finding in the dark as It had been my first time on massive then drove over to Elbert’s northeast ridge and finished around 10:30 am so about 10 hours total, it was quite the day but very rewarding.

The Nolan 14 route starts at Echo Canyon and ends at the Fish Hatchery. We did it last June starting at 4:30 and finishing before dark about 8:00. Obviously takes two cars.

It actually makes a good loop as the CO trail connects from Twin Lakes to almost back to the Fish Hatchery. Little time on the HW from Echo Canyon <-> Twin Lakes, but it's not too bad.
