Camping near Evans/Summit Lake Trailhead

Post by higgyku »

Hike: Mt. Evans - West Ridge via Mt. Spalding (https://www.14ers.com/route.php?route=e ... =Mt.+Evans)

Wanted to reach out to see if anyone has camped around this area?

Looking to camp for 1 night, would prefer free and a national forest (not a campground), not next to people (preferably), and within walking or a short drive distance to the trail head.

Taking someone camping for the 1st time so would like it to be a great experience for them. Will start the trail early in the morning.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Beaver Meadows just west of the Mt. Evans state wildlife area. Doesn't exactly result in a short hike to the summit, but not a ridiculously long hike either.

It is also legal to sleep in your vehicle in the summit parking lot of Mt Evans (I did Saturday night and loved it). Watching the sunset and then sunrise from a 14er summit--my first sunset at 14k'--and watching the goats and sheep doing goat/sheep things was incredible. You could then drive down in the morning to Summit Lake and do your hike. And all that for the $15 entrance fee--or free if you have a national park pass.

I'm guessing it is also legal to sleep in your car at the Summit Lake lot.

Nearly no availability in July unless you gamble on the six fcfs sites.

Just played that game with Brainard Lake which reservable sites are 99% booked until end of season with eight fcfs.
