Which peaks have camping sites close to the trailheads?
Looking for something like Huron Peak. Camping sites next to the trailhead and either a class 2 or class 1 trail. Appreciate any input and or links. Thanks!

If you consider sleeping in your car to be "camping", then pretty much all of them do, except Culebra. Or Longs, for the unsneaky
. If it is a tent you require to be "camping", then still most of them do, especially the ones with trailheads on National Forest or Wilderness lands. Plus, since most peaks have multiple trailheads, you can expect to find camping somewhere on a given peak.
If you ask about specific peaks you might want to climb, you'll get more specific answers such as really good sites to camp at near those peaks.

Lots of camping sites all the way up to and at the trailhead for Mount Shavano.

Lol, sleeping in the car doesn’t count for me. Tent camping with a campfire! Can’t give specific peak yet because I’m trying to figure out which ones have campsites. I read Princeton has a few campsites near the trailhead.

Technically, sleeping in your car does count as camping.

Make sure to check for fire restrictions. Bans aren’t at all uncommon during summer. Stage 1 means you can only have fires at established sites, i.e. pay sites with metal fire rings.

It's an acquired skill to be sure, but it's how I roll, and I doubt I'd be at 350 ranked 13ers any other wayCharlesbusa wrote:Lol, sleeping in the car is not for me

Re: Which peaks have camping sites close to the trailheads?
OP, for the type of camping ambience you're looking for, you may want to check out actual NFS campsites ($$$), where there's fire rings already created.
Trailheads that fit this bill would be ones like the one near Mt. Elbert/Massive. After Labor Day, things get a lot quieter.
Fire bands were heavy and long reaching this year (for I think, good reason), what with the amount of wildfire activity we had, and the lack of precip. Do check out what fire restrictions may apply to the area still.

Re: Which peaks have camping sites close to the trailheads?
Pretty much the entire Sawatch Range has plenty of camping available very near the trailheads. And most of the standard routes up the Sawatch Range are Class 1/2 hikes.
Huron/La Plata/Missouri/Belford/Oxford are all accessible from dispersed camping near and around Winfield.
Shavano/Tabeguache Peak have plenty of dispersed camping spots on road up to trailhead and near trailhead.
Antero has nice camping if you start from the Browns Creek Trailhead, plus a much nicer hike than the standard route up the 4x4wd road.
Harvard/Columbia has plenty of spots on road up to trailhead and Yale is also accessible from this road.
Holy Cross has dispersed camping along TIgwon Rd plus the campground at the trailhead.
And Mt Elbert and Mt Massive have dispersed camping along with campgrounds on the roads leading up to their standard routes and secondary routes.
Really only Mt Princeton is the most limited to camping at the trailhead.
And currently I believe Chaffee and Lake Counties have lifted their fire ban.

OP, as stated earlier there are a fair amount of USFS campgrounds near trailheads. You may have to search them to find fees and reservations (I think most are first come first serve).434stonemill wrote:Holy Cross has dispersed camping along TIgwon Rd plus the campground at the trailhead.
This is the site for the campground referenced above at Tigwon/Half Moon https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/whiteri ... ecid=41357
Sawatch:
Already discussed above
Sangres:
All require some hiking in to get to camp sites except I think you could pitch a tent a Lindsey (I don't remember fire rings though)
San Juans:
Chicago Basin - have to hike in (not sure about Purgatory TH though)
Wilsons - Kilpacker TH has a lot of areas for camping
Handies Group - Grizzly Gultch has a decent amount of room for tents and rock fire pits
DeCaLiBron - Kite Lake has a good amount of camping spots but those fill up real quick
Sherman - There are some dispersed spots along the road I believe
Front Range:
Not a whole lot of places along the roads or right by THs
