Camping near Huron 4wd TH with RTT?

Post by dan_gt02 »

Did a search and found there should be plenty of camping nearby Huron's 4wd TH, but my main question is if it would be suitable for a 4Runner with a roof top tent? Coming through the area on a several week trip in CO and want to hike Huron while I'm around Buena Vista. Trying to camp more often than getting hotels while we're out there.

Thanks!

Many good places to set up camp near the Huron trailhead, just make sure the road is open.

Yeah that is definitely a concern as well. Not sure if they have any plans to clear that section over the next few weeks or not. We'll be there the last week of July.

There's plenty of great camping around Huron, your main concern should definitely be the current road conditions at the time of your trip. Even if it's still not cleared, there's also campsites before you hit the 4wd road if you don't mind a little extra hiking.

I'm curious though, what constitutes "suitable" for a 4runner with a RTT? If you're concerned about the 4runner's capabilities, that depends a whole lot on your experience, which generation it is and how concerned you are about abusing it a little. In a normal year, you should be able to take any stock 4wd up there without too much issue, but what the conditions will be like when you're there is anyone's guess at this point.

If you're concerned about the RTT specifically, I thought being able to camp anywhere (even where there's no flat ground for a tent) was a big part of the appeal?

Question is more about whether there are suitable places along the road to pull off and deploy a tent. I haven’t been down it so I have no idea what to expect. Not worried about the 4Runner making it up the 4wd road (assuming it’s open) but have no idea if that road has places to pull off on the side and open the tent up.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah there's quite a few places to pull off along the 4wd road, including some nice creekside sites and bigger clearings that can fit several vehicles.
