Marmolada Glacier Serac Collapse in the Italian Dolomites

Post by Arndorfer »

Sunday morning July 3rd a 200,000 cubic meter portion of the Punta Rocca glacier fractured high up on Marmolada (the highest peak in the Italian Dolomites).

Condolences to all those involved in this incident.

A friend and I hiked the via ferrata west ridge route of the Marmolada from Passo Fedaia back in August 1998. Back then the glacier started not too far above the Contrin hut shown in the video of the article above and crampons were a necessity even down low. Based on what I've read the glacier has shrunk by over half in the past 20 years. On the way back down we ran into an Aussie at the Contrin hut who asked me if I thought one could make it to the top in sandals. I replied with an emphatic no.

Saw that on Instagram, looked like a dam broke open. Incredible destruction.
