Deer to 13300 - does it go?

Post by denvermikey »

Looking to do Deer Mtn this coming weekend from the North Fork TH. 13300 is right next door but I don't know how that east slope is. Anyone have any beta for this?

TIA!

It looks like there is some beta on 13300 from the deer saddle here https://www.climb13ers.com/colorado-13e ... un-13300-b

I was up at that saddle a few weeks ago. Looked like it went fine, but probably a little above my dog's scrambling threshold.

This is great guys. Thanks for all the info. I will probably give it a go and maybe even try to traverse over to 13202 if the weather holds.

Can't tell if it's clear from the previous responses: this is one peak that is marked incorrectly on Bill's map. The marker is on a sub-summit that's just a gentle slope up from the Deer saddle. The actual summit is north of that, and apparently goes class 4+: https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/triprepo ... trip=14162.

Have fun with Deer -- North Fork Lake Creek is beautiful, and I really liked the hike up to the peak.

LoJ has some more photos of it and says Class 3. I haven't climbed it so just passing that along. It doesn't look that bad in photos but who knows.

I didn't do Deer with 13300, I did 13300 and 13202 together. I went up earlier up a steep grass slope instead of coming from the Deer saddle. That one is a fairly obvious slope from the trail that goes up to the point marked 12990 to the south of the peak. Bypass the first block on the left and go up a nice slab that is maybe class 4, but it was solid and fun. I went under a steeper step (trend right up talus) and popped out on the ridge crest around the right of that in a notch. Below is the summit pitch from above that initial slab area to give you an idea what that looks like after that point. Let me know if you want more pictures of the lower slab section. I actually was just up in the area yesterday, but only did 13556 and 13202.
