Trekking bucket list?

Post by dr_j »

I'm talking about those multi-day hikes that are not quite like the JMT or PCT, but shorter multi-day ones like Everest Base Camp, Inca Trail, Salkantay, Tour du Mont Blanc, etc.

What's your list of must-do treks?

I just got back from a short version of the Annapurna Circuit. The views and experience were amazing and unparalleled to what I've ever seen (so far), but it was definitely a very different experience from a thru hike or backpacking trip. Staying in hotels/hostels every night, buying cooked food, basically just day packs, guide, etc. We were in Nepal for 15 days, hiked 9 of them. Other we met there said it was better than the usual EBC, but I haven't done that, so can't comment beyond what I've heard. It felt about the right length to be in Nepal, but was a bit too short to make the flights long to/from Asia worth it.

I did the Colorado Trail last summer with my dad and it was a blast. My first long hike. Also pretty bucket list for me given how much I love the mountains here, I wanted to experience them a new way. I thought it was a great intro to longer distance hiking as well. At 3-5 weeks, its pretty palpable for the corporate wh*res like myself when comparing to a PCT/CDT/AT style trail, but you still get into the rhythm. Thinking back on your OP, its probably similar to the JMT distance wise. A shorter version of the CT is to do just the Collegiate Peaks loop.

I'd throw either of those into a bucket list having done them. Others you listed up there are on my bucket list.
I thought, I taught, I wrought

After being in both Chamonix and Zermatt last summer, it would be cool to go back sometime and take the Haute Route instead of the train!

A few ideas for you:

1) Torres Del Paine (Circuit or W)
2) Hikers Haute Route (Chamonix to Zermatt)
3) Alta Via 1 (or 2?) in the Dolomites - I can't recall which one is supposed to be better
4) Hornstrandir in Iceland
5) In addition to Annapurna in Nepal there's also Goyko Lakes or Langtang
6) Dientes de Navarino in Chile (southernmost trek in the world)
7) New Zealand - Routeburn, Milford, Kepler treks
8 ) Tasmania - Overland I think is the name?

On this list I've done Routeburn, Langtang, and the W if you need tips.

In addition to all of the above, the Huayhuash Circuit. The Arctic Circle Trail as well.

I want to do that one too, but it seems so dang expensive to get to. What have you looked into as far as getting there? I'd be interested in hearing if you were able to find anything other than the (very) expensive flight out of Ottawa or Greenland and then taking the boat/snowmobile.

Ha, I don't know that there's any good option. I just assume it falls into the "I won the lottery and retired" type of trip.

Looking it up now, it's cheaper than it used to be, but still ~$2500 RT from DEN in May or ~$3100 RT in summer. The price has gone down, but still pricy considering that you can fly to places like Greenland or even Svalbard for cheaper.

Flying to Pangnirtung (Baffin Island) is about $500 cheaper so an out and back to Summit Lake and back might be reasonable. I'd give it a 50/50 chance that I'll ever get there, but it's high on my list. Good luck if you ever get there.

This is a pretty good list of fun long treks. Dying to get the Haute trail of my list.
