Someone needs to ski this peak! (Not me, I know nothing about backcountry skiing, but the conditions today seemed perfect!!!). There's continuous snow from the summit to Blue Lakes Campground, but at a minimum there's a clear path from the summit to 11,500'. It didn't look like anyone had been out here in months, which is a shame. Winter road closure in effect 2 miles from Blue Lakes Campground, adding 4 miles RT (10.5 miles total). The road has several feet of snow, and once past the campground that number doubles. I was able to hike in the morning without traction until Blue Lakes, then put on snowshoes for the rest of the hike. There's a very large cornice at the top of the summit, and I had to switch to crampons to get down (I was able to use snowshoes up, but they weren't practical on my way down). Ice axe was necessary to get up and down the cornice, especially the last 50 feet or so. Summit was windblown. I started at 4am and summited around 7:30am. The snow was very soft on my way down, warming up fast. I wouldn't have wanted to summit any later than I did.
