Nice day today on the traverse from Citadel to Pettingell. Route is snow free almost all the way to the Citadel, a few places where you have to traverse snow fields for maybe 30 yards. The traverse is snow-free and in good shape - plenty of loose rock from the freeze-thaw season though, tread lightly. Rap station on the traverse has probably 5 strands of tat on 2 rap rings and a quicklink, we (party of 2) and a party of approx 10 ahead of use used it without issue. We did see others climbing Snoopy's Collar as well, looks to still be in good shape with an early start. bdloftin77	Pettingell Conditions 07/20/2019 19:20 How are the conditions on Pettingell itself? IÃ¢‚¬„¢m guessing that the trail from Herman Gulch to the lake below Pettingell is fairly snow free. Thanks!
nickle	Herman Lake 07/21/2019 11:38 You're spot on - trail is snow free to Herman Lake and you can avoid snow (or cross 30 yard drifts) all the way to the basin below Citadel/Pettingell Pettingell itself is also snow free all the way up the S ridgeline to the summit
polar	Thanks for the report 07/23/2019 19:35 Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to do Snoopy's Backside, Citadel to Pettingell, and Pettingell east ridge all in one go for a while now. After reading your report I decided it's time to go for it! Allow me to nitpick on the name of the landmark a little: the couloir on the Citadel you can see from Herman Lake / Pettingell is not Snoopy's Collar, but Snoopy's Backside (aka NW Chute). Snoopy's Collar can only be seen from the south side (Dry Gulch approach). From that direction the Citadel looks like Snoopy sleeping on his dog house, and the collar goes right up to his neck. This is a photo of Snoopy's Collar I took in May, hopefully you can see Snoopy sleeping!
