Highly recommend the Gold Basin approach! Great morning up the West Slopes. No idea why this isn't a more popular route, it's outlined well in Roach's book, and it's really really gorgeous. Pretty short route, 2,300ft and ~3.5mi RT from the upper trailhead.

The road was pretty rocky and had some decently tough obstacles, but my stock 4Runner got up and down without too many problems. High clearance and low gearing definitely needed, so just hike the road if you don't trust yourself to drive it; only 1 mile one-way.

From Harrison and Third in Leadville, 7.4mi S to Lake County 7. (Thatâs the road over Weston Pass). Then just 7.5 mi east on Weston pass road to TH. OR come at it from the other side of Weston Pass, but you want high clearance west of the pass.

Roaches say 4WD buys you another 1.1 mi to 11,660 upper TH â appears thatâs what OP did?

Iâm doing Horseshoe the last Sunday in September. Probably with Finnback and Peerless. Any joiners welcome - would be early - trying to go to Broncos game that aft.
