We wore snowshoes from the trailhead to around 12,000 feet where the snow became patchy. It might be possible without, but I wouldn't advise it. Went with just boots from 12k to approximately 13.5k, where we threw the snowshoes with their built in traction back on and used poles for a section of somewhat steeper snow. Above that section we cached the snowshoes and made the mostly dry walk to the summit.
