Arrived at trail-head at 4:45 AM 7-8 vehicles in the east parking lot. Temp. was below freezing as I could see frost in a few places with my headlamp. Trail to Bierstadt was easy straight forward. Bierstadt to Sawtooth was fun. Descending Bierstadt is very steep and no trail, you can see where others have gone here and there, and there are cairns to help a little bit but easy to see where to go. Climbing up to the point where you cross over the ridge to the north side was the toughest climbing on the route for me, but maybe I didn't take the easy way. The north side of the ridge that looks the scariest in the pictures was easy. Sawtooth to Evans challenge is following the cairns, a couple of times got off route and an easy scramble back on course. Evans to the top of the gully was easy, the gully is steep just like everyone stated before, but slow and steady and it is no problem. From the bottom of the gully to the trail in the willows I again got off track, bushwhacked for 50 yards and found the trail. Just keep to the left till you find the well established trail. A few places of mud but probably about as good as it gets with this trail. Some said need pants for the willows I had zero problems with shorts. This route is tough but a very fun route and nice to have a different return route for other views. Highlight of the trip was seeing what I believe was a Pine Marten between Bierstadt and Sawtooth, it came right up to me, I posted a photo.
