Trail is well packed to treeline, but lots of soft deep snow on all aspects above treeline, including ridges. Even on the crest of the divide to the summit, and on rock, there was about 3 feet of unsupportive snow, even with snowshoes. Little windblown or crusted, it's mostly powdery even if it looks windblown. Similar all along the ridge to Jones Pass, trail is snow covered sidehilling. Coverage is very good for early season skiing. Would probably be easier to climb Hassell from Herman Gulch with these conditions, hopefully less of a slog. Purple snowflake day for sure.
