Route: From herman gulch
Posted On: 2020-06-14, By: Trotter
Info: Trail to herman lake has some mud, and a few snow sections that are mostly pre-postholed. Ridge to Hassell in great shape, only a couple short snow sections to cross. Almost summer conditions, did it in trail runners

Route: South Ridge
Posted On: 2019-10-06, By: supranihilest
Info: The ridge from Pettingell to "Hassel" is very long. About half to two thirds of it is scrambling. Once you're past the scrambling the terrain becomes mostly Class 1 with a little bit of Class 2 for each successive bump along the summit ridge. The summit appears to be the middle of the three bumps. To return to Herman Gulch take the obvious trail down, this is the Continental Divide Trail.

Route: Jones Pass
Posted On: 2019-09-08, By: shaunblair
Info: Summer conditions, as expected. Was surprised to still see patches of snow in the surrounding basins. Shared the summit with the "Devil on the Divide" racers, note that the first weekend after Labor Day has this annual race occur.

Route: Go Up
Posted On: 2019-05-28, By: dubsho3000
Info: Lots of snow in the area, and large cornices as well. Was able to skin from the parking lot up to a shallow buttress. From there it was all snow to the ridge. The backside of Hassell is a mix of snow and rock, but it's definitely skiable from the summit on the front-side.

Route: via CDT from Herman Gulch
Posted On: 2018-09-07, By: LetsGoMets
Info: Great trail the entire way up Hassell from Herman Gulch, summer conditions. I'd recommend taking the CDT up for sure, it's scenic and a nice hike. It also makes for a great loop if you include Pettingell via the East Ridge and down the South Slopes.

Route: northeast bowl

Info: Good coverage in both the southeast and northeast bowls for skiing.

Route: Herman Gulch Trailhead Approach
Posted On: 2016-07-17, By: jasayrevt
Info: Clear and very nice enjoyable trip with reaching summit. Great, beautiful 13er mountain. This route is definitely cool and lightly traveled. Prime summer conditions up high for navigating slopes & ridge line well. Trail runners and light pack were good. Travel safely / swiftly in the hills folks. Pictures included as beta

Route: E Ridge from Butler
Posted On: 2012-01-07, By: Monster5
Info: Attempted the longer East ridge from Butler Gulch after gaining pt 12,109 (snowshoes/spikes helpful but not needed). Turned back just below the junction with the continental divide (~12,750) due to a section with poor avy conditions (tension cracks either side of a convex) and no safe passage. The cornice on the divide is also starting to get pretty hefty. From this approach, I would recommend crossing the longer E/W ridge bordering Butler and contouring into the basin above and to the east of Hassell Lake before picking an obvious, currently safe line up Hassell's direct, east flank. Or take Jones Pass Road all the way to the Divide before heading south.
