I talked to one of the volunteers and he said he heard a rumor that they may not open til later this month to manage the trail conditions. It's true that this time of year with the snow drifts and muddy sections hiker's tend to skirt around these sections causing a larger impact. I can understand why they'd want to do that, though, it's slightly annoying.
