Mineral Park Trailhead

Road Difficulty

2WD, rough dirt road 2   (0=Paved, 6=Very Difficult 4WD)
Rough 2WD dirt to the TH.

Driving Directions

Take Colorado 9 to the town of Alma. In the middle of town, look for a small sign for the road to Kite Lake. Turn here and drive a bit through a residential area. Drive just under 3 miles up towards Kite Lake and take a hard right onto Forest Road 415. Drive 2.75 miles to a parking lot near the Mineral Park mine in Dolly Varden Gulch. This is a large, open gravel area with plenty of parking.

Winter Access

Closed at the Paris Mill site which is just below the turn-off onto the Mineral Park/Bristlecone road.

Info: The road, though potholed in many places, is completely open to Mineral Park. A passenger car with careful driving could probably make it to Bristlecone and even higher on the mtn (but why try?). Enough snow on some of the switchbacks on the upper mtn road (say 12,500) that would seem to still prohibit a 4-whl from getting to the Dolly Varden mine.

Info: 5-31-05: I drove to the Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area today, well above the Mineral Park mine. The road above Mineral Park is 4WD. There is still one snowy portion that wasn’t too bad, but definitely a high clearance spot.

Info: The trailhead is open. Good clearance 2WD vehicles can make it to Mineral Park. The road does have a lot of pot-holes.

Info: Was able to drive to within 20 feet of the Mineral Park Mine on 5/21/05. There is one large pesky snow drift at that point blocking a direct access to the parking area. The general condition of the road is passable for a 4WD. I would recommend the road for higher clearance vehicles (Standard SUV and up) at this time due to snow drifts, pot holes and mud puddles. All of these obstacles were easily passable with my stock Nissan XTerra. The last drift is going to take some time to melt out, or else a kind soul with a shovel (I unfortunately didn’t have mine with me)

Info: Made it about 1.5 miles up 415 yesterday (5/16/05) in a 4wd truck and parked because of several large snow drifts.

Info: The road to Mineral Park is blocked by snow shortly after leaving the Kite Lake road.

Info: The 415 road to Mineral Park (from the Kite Lake Road) is closed in winter. It usually opens up in late May. When open, 2WD vehicles can drive to the Mineral Park TH.
