Posted By: Ceastar Info: We thought ourselves silly for bringing the AWD until we turned up "Crest Dr." The high clearance was needed for the few rough spots on the .5 drive to the trailhead. We were one of only four vehicles on this TH as compared to the full lot + we saw at Kite Lake TH from the top of Bross (I mean, near the top of Bross).
Posted By: socal_ck Info: Road is clear up to posted 4wd parking area. There was two "sketch" spots driving up from Crest Dr in my Subaru Impreza wagon. Jeeps ATVs continued up FS road 457. Sorry for no pics.
Posted By: gouldst Info: Made it up to the Quartzville traillhead today in a Honda Pilot - normally not the best 4WD vehicle, but it did fine. Road is rough but certainly doable - there was a Chevy Traverse at the trailhead also.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Closed for the winter. The 4WD road is snowed-over and parking is not allowed at the bottom or along the main street. Open to view photo
Posted By: giarcd Info: Cameron Ampitheater is clear of abstructions for hiking all the way. Trail is free of snow to summit
Posted By: scotthsu Info: Road is dry to within 0.2 mile of the end. Fairly large drift still blocking passage with no parking at the drift.
Posted By: pioletski Info: 5/11/09 - still closed by snowdrift just after the turn onto "Crest Drive" (i.e. Quartzville Road).
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Closed by snow and no available parking. Try the Moose Creek "trailhead" at Zinc Road.
Posted By: randyk Info: The trailhead is still block by some pretty big snowdrifts. a 4 wheel drive will not get you through the half mile of private land. One of the drifts is an 8 foot vertical wall. You can drive approx 60 feet on the private land before getting stuck.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Blocked by snow at the start of the 4WD parking area. No parking in the area.
Posted By: TravelingMatt Info: Do not follow the directions in Gerry Roach’s book; his shortcut between Park Country roads 4 and 6 is now closed. The directions above are correct. A normal car can go at least 1/4 mile up the forest road to a small turnout, but parking there is probably tresspassing. On the way down two guys had an SUV parked all the way up at about 12,500 feet.
Posted By: CO087DYO Info: CLEAR - However not well marked (and scary No Tresspassing signs). I would not have found if not for Bill’s excellent directions
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Drove to the Quarztville 4WD road. Still closed after a short distance. Will be another few weeks before it’s melted out.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Closed in winter, this TH usually melts out in late May or early June. There is no longer a 2WD parking area at the base of the 4WD road. So, there is no winter parking in the area. Parking on the side of the first 1/4 mile of the 4WD road is considered trespassing and the town roads are clearly marked with "No Parking Along Road" signs. |
