Posted By: major_tom Info: Drove CR 4 from SH 9 to the Magnolia Mill. Road is in great shape, one big rut right before the mill at the bottom of the hill can be negotiated, don‘t let it stop ya. No snow anywhere on the lower half of the Jeep trail to Wheeler Lake.
Posted By: jeffth5 Info: Gate is open and road is in good shape for first 1.6 miles. There is rut about 0.1m before the end of the road that will stop most cars. Fortunately, there is some parking just before tackling the rut/last hill. 10mins of shoveling some dirt into the rut would probably fix the problem.
Posted By: Grover Info: The gate is still locked at the reservoir. Road is clear of snow. Beyond the gate, the snow starts just after the old mine.
Posted By: a forest Info: Gate was closed at res. Easy to get to, possibly could make it in 2wd. little bit of snow on road/hill
Posted By: mikefromcraig Info: The road from the reservoir up to the 4wd trailhead at 11,680 is pretty rough. Based on the 14ers.com ranking system I would probably give it a 4+. No way an outback could make it.
Posted By: KansasBoarder Info: Rough 2wd to Montgomery Reservoir TH clear and dry. Wheeler Lakes 4WD quite soggy, snow patches after 11,500 feet (end of flat marshy area as road begins to swing across valley and up to the lakes). ~2 miles up from the Reservoir is where snow patches begin.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: 2wd accessible to the summer parking area on both sides of the "slide" bridge. Road closed after that and even snowmobiles cannot currently make it around the lake.
Posted By: scholbiwan Info: Drove in a 4x4 Tacoma all the way to the trailhead. It was a little icy getting there, but it thawed by the time we left.
Posted By: BobbyFinn Info: Mostly dry. A few patches of snow ice. Shouldn‘t be a problem for any car. Winter closure is in effect so you can‘t drive all the way around to the back side of the reservoir.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Closed at the parking area just after the small bridge crossing, at the north end of the reservoir.
Posted By: benners Info: Closed at the gate 1/4 mile before the parking lot due to snow drifting, should probably be open to the parking lot in a week or two.
Posted By: Grover Info: 6/28/08- The road is rough after the res., and I would recommend you have a proper vehicle to go up into the basin. There is a large snowfield blocking passage at 11,500‘, which is just shy of the normal 4x4 parking area. Other snow fields abound after that, but it is (was) melting out quickly. You can either walk over or around the snow fields, but the area is just wet in general. I did the North Ridge on Democrat, and it was snow free. North Couloir still has snow it, and even had fresh ski tracks in it.
Posted By: Flatland14er Info: Open and very well maintained all the way to the northwest corner of the reservoir at the gate, even after recent heavy snow. Plenty of traffic around the reservoir heading to the falls for ice climbing.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Montgomery Reservoir is usually accessible in winter to the point of the main parking area. The road that continues west around the reservoir opens up in late spring. |
