Posted By: Greenhouseguy Info: The road is in good shape all the way to Leavick, where the plow berm has stopped everybody except for the snowmobiles. The snow beyond Leavick isn‘t very deep, and it should be passable by 4WD before too long.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Good News! The road has been plowed all the way to the Leavick site, 1 mile up from the normal winter closure. It was plowed on 3/4/2010 but I don’t know if they will continue to keep it plowed that far.
Posted By: mrgooseskin Info: Following the recent snowfall, the Four Mile Creek road is, well, covered in snow. Today there was about 6-10 inches of soft snow covering the road surface. We were able to 4 wheel through the fresh powder to about 9.5 miles, and then it became a little sketchy, even a tricked out rig wouldn‘t be able to make it much further than that.
Posted By: Alpine Info: Just a restatement of Kevin‘s comments: I drove my Corolla to the nine mile + mark along the FourMile access road Sarurday 1/16 with absolutely no problems - 99.5% no snow until the 9 mile mark. I actually drove it another half mile or so but decided it was not a good idea - the snow quickly got deeper and softer than I was comfortable with. Four wheel drive will get you maybe another hundred yards.
Posted By: Kevin8020 Info: The road is accessible to the normal winter closure near 11,100‘. A car with snow tires can make it up to that point, though I would recommend other vehicles stop where the deeper snow begins. There is no defined place at the end of the area an which to turn around. I spent over an hour slowly turning around at that location and significantly tore up the snow at the end of the drivable part of the road.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: The road is still open to the gate at 12,000 feet. Was up there on 11/28 to ski Sherman and even a few cars were able to drive almost to the gate.
Posted By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Road is still open to the gate at 12,000‘. 4WD is required because there is a thin layer of packed snow above the normal winter closure. Drove my Suburban up there on 11/25.
Posted By: Dad Mike Info: Road was mostly clear to Leavick...passenger cars would have no issues. We stopped at 11,600 for the Horseshoe turnoff, but could have made it to the gate with no problem in a stock jeep wrangler.
Posted By: MountainHiker Info: basically dry to just beyond Levick. Last mile had snow. 4WDs made it to the gate. The snow got slushy during the day. It was probably more icy the following evening.
Posted By: bblack99 Info: Reached parking at 11,800‘ in a Mazda 3. Road is dry and pretty simple to navigate. Could have made it to the gate, but parking there was full.
Posted By: Aubrey Info: Made it to about 11,700‘ and about 1 mile past the Leavick site. Good parking there, as the road is wide. Just beyond that point, a big pile of snow (ice in the morning; slush and melting snow in the late morning through afternoon). Farther up the road, there are many dry parts; just a couple snow drifts here and there.
Posted By: Ski4me Info: Closed at normal winter closure, about 1 miles short of the old mine. We started to drive on the frozen snow, but thought better of it after 100 yards, knowing that a thaw could make it difficult get out again in the afternoon.
Posted By: thunderinacircle Info: Road totally clear to 11,100, as described in the route description for winter. I didn‘t test it with my car; didn‘t look like anyone had driven past that point recently though the high winds could have obscured things.
Posted By: Shad Info: Road is closed 3.25 miles from the summer trailhead according to my GPS. Snow drifts across the road.
Posted By: Brad Info: Closed at winter closure about 1 mile below Leavick site. There is evidence that some have driven further but not much. Parts of the road are blown dry and others have over a foot of snow.
Posted By: srichmon Info: Still clear as of 11/8, made it to the gate with my sedan without a problem.
Posted By: jeremy27 Info: Road was clear all the way to the gate as of 11/2/08. Our Toyota Camry made it almost all the way to the gate.
Posted By: Scatman Info: Made it to the gate on September 19th with a 4x4 but all vehicles could make it. A little rough above the parking area.
Posted By: skimrg81 Info: Road is clear all the way up to the gate below the mine. However, you want to park at the lot about 1000‘ before the gate. I believe 2 wheel drive vehicles could make it up. Be carefull leaving though as the road is muddy with the melting snow. Now snow drifts to drive through anymore.
Posted By: Kzar Info: Trailhead is mostly clear of snow all the way to the locked gate just below Dauntless Mine. There is some minor snow close to the gate but I believe a passenger car can make it. I had a 4Runner and made a track through 12 inches of snow on the uphill side. If you are not comfortable going to the gate, there is parking less than 1/2 mile from the gate that is snow free. At least as of this afternoon. |
