Posted By: Chicago Transplant Info: Plowed to campground, some narrow muddy spots where it’s single lane plowed through avy debris that might give some 2wd vehicles pause. CG at trailhead not open, lower dispersed camp area are open but bathrooms locked and some snow patches around the sites. Did not hike the ice lakes trail, but expect a lot of snow. |

Posted By: Chicago Transplant Info: Beyond the campground at the Ice Lakes Basin TH, the road continues as a 4WD road to Bandora Mine and Rico-Silverton trail. This road is easily driven in a Subaru Outback. There is one sort of rocky part just before the mine where the extra clearance is nice but its not hard to navigate. Otherwise two sustained steeper sections don’t have clearance issues but the AWD/4WD will be necessary (especially if wet) to get up the steep dirt. End of the road is a little over 2.5 miles past the campground. May be a high stream crossing just before the final parking area during runoff but its low now. Access to several 13ers in the area, there is also a small parking pullout at the bottom of the Hope Pass trail as well. I thought the road was easier than many of the "3" rated roads on this site, so probably a 2 or 2-1/2 in difficulty for this section after the campground. |
