Driving Directions

Independence Pass is the summit of Colorado State Highway 82 as it runs between Twin Lakes and Aspen. The pass is located on the Continental Divide. To reach CO 82 from the east follow US 24 approximately 14 miles south of Leadville or 20 miles north of Buena Vista to the signed turn-off. From the west, CO 82 runs from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and continues through Aspen, follow the signs to negotiate a few turns in Aspen. The pass has some tight switchbacks and may not be negotiable by vehicles with large trailers.

Winter Access

The pass is closed in winter. The east side gate is at appx 10,475 at Graham Gulch, just west of the standard TH for La Plata Peak around MM 68. The west side gate is apprx 10 mile east of Aspen.

I biked to the top early this morning to go for Twining and PT 13,500. Got some good pics of the snow status at the top which I will add to the report by tomorrow (when Im home and can pull the pictures off my camera).

Info: Signs at the 70/91 junction state Indy Pass will close for the season at 1pm tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 9).

Info: Please note that Independence Pass will be closed on Wednesday 8/22 and Thursday 8/23 to motor vehicle traffic due to the USA Pro Cycling Challenge stage 3 and 4 races that are using the road. More information is available at CDOT‘s website regarding this and additional road closures over the course of the races.

I rode my MTB up the pass yesterday - what a great spin, with NO traffic. See photos for snow conditions - it’s possible to link snowfields on the East to the lower switchback; 4th of July bowl is still skiable.

Info: CDOT Press Release dated 5/3/12 states that Independence Pass will open on May 11th, 2012 at 9am. This is about 2 weeks earlier than normal.

Info: As of 10/25/10 the pass is closed for the season, expect to reopen in late May or early June depending on weather.
