The forgotten Sawatch peaks

Jones Mountain South 13218
Gladstone Ridge 13209
Jones Mountain North 12995

After a tough day in the Sangres I wanted an easy day in the Sawatch, five minutes of research brought me to these peaks.

I started out at the Ptarmigan Lakes TH and headed up the trail, at treeline I headed west making for the saddle of the Jones. The last 400 feet of Jones North is steep but not too difficult. On the summit I found an 8 GB SD chip, so if anybody lost a memory card please contact me. The traverse to Jones South is straight forward and very quick. The most difficult section is 100 feet of scree and talus.

I had not studied the map close enough to realize that a 4x4 road reaches 12k just south of Jones. So for the next half hour I saw lots of people going to Ptarmigan Lakes fishing and just hanging around the beautiful area. I made it from the summit of Jones South to the saddle where the trail is in 13 minutes. The ridge to Gladstone would take longer, I made quick work of the first couple of false summits before finally succumbing to the previous day's fatigue. The summit just never appeared to get any closer. After nearly an hour on the ridge I summited, reading the register I noticed that a Jack Dais was the last person to summit two days prior. For those of you who don't know Jack Dais is one of the very few people to climb all of Colorado's 12ers. That's a 1300+ peak list.

On the descent I stopped and talked to a few people before running down the trail hoping to get back home before 5:30, however an accident on the Cottonwood Pass road prevented that from happening. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by how nice these peaks were. This would be a nice area to go to when the crowds are not fishing.
