 A Golden Day

So last weekend the crew decided to do some laps up on Loveland pass. During our travels we noticed that the east face of Golden Bear was still holding some good snow. The clear winner for this weekend was on the list. I live by the motto that 'if it looks like fun, then do it', so lets go do Golden Bear.

Rob and I started at the Loveland parking lot around 6am. We ended up taking the route straight up towards the Eisenhower tunnel. Now if there is continuous snow then the obvious route choice would be through the skiers tunnel under I70 and up the chair lift to the direct east face of GB. Instead we opted up the southwest ridge and got a great look across Loveland ski area. We took a nice leisurely pace and hit the summit at 830am. Sat around for a little while for the snow to soften up and dropped in around 9:20am. While on Golden Bear we noticed that the summit register had been up there since the mid-90's. There were some pretty familiar names on it; Gerry Roach being the most recognized. Not alot of people choose to climb Golden Bear, we were the first to summit (or at least look at the register) since September of 2011. We geared up and got ready for the ski after a nice long break. We chose to only descend about 2/3 of the face so we could boot it back up the ridge afterwards. Great corn skiing was had and smiles were on both of our faces.

Since the weather was holding we decided to gain the ridge again and look at our options. We both saw a nice face past lift 9 and started walking. Got to our intended line and ate lunch, relaxed, and took in the views. Rob dropped in first and had some fantastic turns and I dropped in after and enjoyed the corn. We skied out through the basin and got within a 1/4 mile of the car. By 1:30 we were at Tommyknocker Brewing having lunch and a beer.

I still can't put the skis up yet.

Legs are still going even if the chair isn't

Your TR was the perfect motivation for me to get rid of a hangover yesterday and enjoy some turns from Golden Bear. Thanks.
