I have done a lot of TR's on the Y couloir on Pikes, so this time I decided to just put together a slideshow to music of the adventure. It can be viewed in HD if possible. Dave "Hoot" Gibson and I have a tradition of climbing the Y on Pikes north face for the past 8 years. One year we had to turn back due to poor snow. This year I decided to do it as a dayhike (like last year) with an approach via the Crags route and downclimb of Rumdoodle Ridge into Bottomless Pit. Hoot led a group of 4 from Barr Camp and I was to meet them at Bottomless Pit.
I made good time, but they made even better time on the firm snow! I tried to play catch up, but it was too chilly for the group to wait on me long. Hoot and I climbed a new variation of the left branch, while the rest of the group did the center branch. The Y is in great shape!

Kevin, in your video it looks like you went all the way to the saddle on Rumdoodle. Is that how you've always dropped into the Pit? The 3 or 4 times I've done Rumdoodle, I never did that. Just curious.
Nice tradition you and Hoot have! I'm glad some spring storms helped out this year!
I've been up Rumdoodle once and down it twice and I always go via the saddle. The slope below that saddle has been mostly dry both times and is easy scree. I figure it's the safest way to go solo. I didn't want to end up in a gully with hard snow. Which way have you gone?
Kevin, I haven't gone all the way to the saddle before, although I see your point and understand. I've always dropped off to climber's right as I start to descend the ridge. As we dropped down, we would contour towards the Pit/bottom of Y, crossing a few gullies along the way. With a little route finding, it's not too bad.
Although one must resist the urge to descend too far because it will become too steep on near vertical slabs.
on both the variation of the left branch as well as the slideshow - thoroughly enjoyed that! I'm going to have to try that Rumdoodle approach one of these days.
