 Mauna Kea

Short update to the more detailed previous posts re: Mauna Kea.

My son and I visited MK last week. Took the generally well-marked Humu'ulu trail. Caltopo rendition of trail quite accurate; used it to load waypoints into GPS. Useful, since there were none of the usual topo/cultural features found in CO (lakes -except for one), streams, etc. URL for bigislandhikes.com proved useful; had distances for segments (e.g. distance from initial turnoff to first junction was 0.25 mi).

Had planned to spend the night in the car at the VIS (9200 ft) to acclimate; phone call several months ago said it was OK; ranger on site said no (had to choose alternative location along Saddle Road at 6500 ft).

No water along route, not even at top (just porta-potties). Had planned accordingly. Temp probably around 40 at VIS with alpine start around 5am; around 45 in summit area when we arrived there. Relatively light wind. Had planned to hike up a week earlier but blowing snow forecast (50mph sustained, gusting to 70+) convinced us to wait for a better day.

Saw only one other hiker all day, except for a few near the VIS mid afternoon. And yes, a trailrunner as well.

A memorable hike to this very special place.
