Report on my Ptarmigan Peak and Weston Peak solo hike on June 8, 2018.
I swatted two mosquitoes today. I summited two 13ers in the Mosquito Range, that is. One can't get any more solo than this. There were no other cars, and no other person on these mountains while I was there.
Weston Pass - Trailhead for Weston and Ptarmigan Peaks
Start: 7:35 am. Finish: 1:05 pm. Total time: 5 & 1/2 hours. Hike, rest, hike time: 4 & 3/4 hours. I spent about 20 minutes on each peak. Total miles: 4.69.
The climb to the saddle is almost a mile, and extremely steep.
I kept my car in view for almost 3/4 mile.
Looking down on my lonely car
Once I reached the saddle, I could turn left for Ptarmigan, or right for Weston. I started with Ptarmigan Peak.
Looking ahead to Ptarmigan Peak
I summited Ptarmigan by 10:00 am.
Ptarmigan summit rock pile.
I didn't bring a paper and pencil to add my name to those in the little plastic bottle I found on Ptarmigan. I did find the peak elevation marker.
After snacking a little on Ptarmigan, I began my descent to the saddle to begin my approach up Weston Peak.
Weston Peak ahead (the one on the left)
There is a narrow ridge to cross in order to reach Weston. It scared the daylights out of me with the wind blowing as it was.
This picture doesn't seem to adequately illustrate the narrow ridge
I reached Weston's summit at 11:20 am. I took my pack off and snacked some more, and walked all over looking for an elevation marker.
No marker on Weston, but the summit rock pile is ahead.
