 Greenhorn Mountain via Bartlett Trail

Greenhorn is the Pueblo County highpoint. That's why we climbed it. But it's a worthy hike for other reasons as well. It's in the Greenhorn Mountain wilderness, and you may not see anyone else the whole time you are hiking.

By my GPS tracks, this hike was 17 miles roundrip with somewhere around 4400' of elevation gain. It's never really steep until you get to the end.

Here's the link to the blog post.

Well that's odd. The trail doesn't seem to follow the USGS map - which is probably outdated. Some newer maps have deleted this trail entirely.

The old trail

Nice report, and thanks for posting your tracks! Ten years ago, we hiked to Greenhorn following the old Bartlett trail as shown on the USGS map. While it was quite overgrown, we were generally able to follow it. Our GPS tracks showed the original route to be about 11.2 miles roundtrip with just over 5,000 feet of gain. At the time, we were surprised that they'd abandoned the original trail, as we found that (though overgrown and having a fair amount of deadfall), it was generally in good shape. Now, ten years later, it may be nearly impossible to follow.

Interesting that they no longer maintain the current trail. Maybe they should clean up the old trail instead.

I wouldn't mind going back sometime to check and see if you can still follow the old trail. The upper portion would cut off significant distance from the journey.
Then again, the "new trail" is already starting to be overgrown so we definitely don't need people splitting the trail.
