"No One Told Me There Were Cool Rocks Up Here" (or "The I-70 Tourist")
OK - two hikes very accessible from I-70 in one weekend. Both conducted in mid-late afternoons.
The Point - Sunday 7.28 - approx 8 miles
Scouted out the path up to this area on Google Earth - you park at the Vail Pass Reststop and go south parallel to highway for a second and then cut up valley toward Ptarmigan Pass
Expected to top up on grassy top - but instead found a little world of wonder....
Upon reaching up near that Pass - was Shocka Khan'd to see like 20+ people up on the pass itself. For a moment I was thinking way more people had come up this way from crowded parking lot at rest area -
but no. they were all ATV'ers.
but it worked out OK for afternoon - as that huge pack left and no one else came by until I was leaving.
Woods Mtn Addendum: - approx. 6.5 miles
Have been to Herman's Gulch (aka "Herman's Head") like 10 times but not up the Watrous Gulch drainage ever. (Yet I have never hiked Pettengel?)
Weather was not all that great but needed to bust out quick hike so thought I would at least scope it out...
Woods MTN - Saturday 7.29
Ended up pulling a 'Hickenlooper' from west side of Woods over around down the east side. Weather was just unsettled but OK.

After reading this report, I just HAD to follow in your footsteps. I had some extra time so I tagged Ptarmigan Hill and PT12207 but I wouldn't have gotten any of them had you not posted this report. I had no idea there was a trail starting at the rest stop. Thanks!!
