 skiing the one armed Angel

Enter your trip report here...My grand dog, Chopper, and I have climbed and/or skied over a dozen 14ers together. Wanting to add one more we went to ski the Angel. However, this year the snow has vanished earlier than I anticipated and the Angel had lost her left (south facing) arm and her head.

One armed headless Angel

To me that meant that trying to skin up was a bad choice, but I was still determined to get in a few turns. We camped at the primo camping spot at 11,000 ft with great water, after hiking 1.5 miles up the trail the night before our climb. Starting out at 6 a.m. the next morning in my AT boots, but carrying skis, we took the hiking trail to where it crosses the Angel, and dropped all skiing gear at the top of the Angel's remaining right arm, at 13,200ft. From there, it is a 1000 ft climb to the summit, the top block of which was a bit awkward in AT boots, and we summited at 9:15.

By the time we got back down to where we left the skis it was around 10 and the snow had softened up nicely, gracing us with a 1000 ft descent on soft, spring corn.

The hike out was, at times, miserable finding our way around and over a tangle of blowdowns, but the exit to regain the trail at 11,200 ft was very easy to see and find. All in all another great day with Chopper!

Gotta love any turns you can get in June after a dry winter.
