DOGS: On Sunday, 7.19.20, we hiked Mt. Elbert with two dogs (from the Northeast Trailhead) and we all reached the summit. Our golden retriever (1 1/2 years old) was amazing and could navigate all that was presented to him. Our little terrier hiked the few miles through the trees on the way up and on the descent. Once out of tree line, we placed our terrier in a backpack and carried him to the summit as the terrain became extremely steep and rocky. Carrying a dog in a backpack (20 extra pounds) was extremely difficult and we will not be doing this again anytime soon.
WATER: We each took a 3.5 liter camelbak full of water for ourselves (humans) and we all ran out before returning to the bottom of the trail. We took a 40 oz hydro flask of water for the dogs and we also ran out of water for them before we reached the bottom. If you bring a dog of this size, you may want more water than 40 ounces. We saw plenty of people hiking without camelbaks, but we do not know how they had enough water. We also carried a ziplock bag of dog food for the dogs and fed them by hand intermittently. They both ate whenever it was presented.
KEYS:*** Also- we lost our car keys somewhere along the trail and they are still missing. If you are hiking this trail from this day forward, could you please keep an eye out for our keys.... somewhere along the Northeast trail and the summit? The key ring holds a Toyota Tundra key, a fob, a few other keys, and two very sentimental dog tags from our two dogs who have passed away. One dog tag says Zeke and the other Widgeon. Each of the dog tags have a phone number and an address on them that are no longer valid. Please text me if you find our keys. We would be forever grateful. Thank you so much and best of luck!! - JaimiAnn 303-810-9040
