Mummy Mountain, starting from Lawn Lake trailhead, was a beautiful hike, with some unexpected challenges along the way. I began fairly late, around 5:30, as there was a forecast of thunderstorms around noon. The Lawn Lake trail is a very well beaten trail, and the gentle slope was quite a nice respite from my usual intensity of sprinting up 14ers. The morning was cool, and very pleasant! The trail and surroundings are SO green!
Just to make sure I was following the proper navigation, I used AllTrails app to help my route finding. After turning right, southeast, off of Lawn Lake trail and onto Black Canyon Trail, the trail is easy to follow for a short while. But. Caution need to be taken! After about 1km, the trail route on AllTrails heads northeast. Where this deviation occurs from Black Canyon Trail is easy to miss. Once I began heading northeast, I noticed the trail becoming less and less defined. There are Cairns placed along the way, but these are deceiving. I had to route find, and scramble through brush/thicket for about 400m from about 11,300ft - 11,700ft. Once I cleared the treeline, remaining dedicated to the ridgeline and curving gently northward was easy.
Reaching the summit was gorgeous from this route upward! A very rewarding hike, very relaxed, super chill. On the descent, I referred to AllTrails to help navigate the proper descent, as the slope takes a very steep line looking southwest from the ridgeline. I made a mistake on my navigation, as there are very little trail indicators. I cut south wayyyyy too early, and attempted to follow glacier runoff downward, back towards the intersection with Lawn Lake Trail. My error in navigation was incredibly harrowing. I followed the runoff from about 13,100ft down to 12,000ft. Andddd I cliffed out! The runoff "creek" sharply left the rockbed and plunged straight down over a cliff. I attempted to remedy the situation by scrambling due West, before adjusting to Southwest. From 12,000ft to 11,500ft, I downclimbed the most sketchy of cliffs. I should have had a helmet and ropes for this unplanned descent. This was a descent of Class4/5 difficulty. I am blessed to have my life. After my racing heart came back down to a normal pace, I rejoined solid earth, and scampered easily from 11,500ft to 11,150ft to join Crystal Lake Trail. Once back on the trail, I thanked the Good Lord above. And took in the most beautiful of views along the trail for about 7 miles back to the Lawn Lake Trailhead.
Blessed and thankful - be careful with navigation, but this cute 13er is a fun one for an enjoyable day, and it is SO lush and green at the current time! (my route, below)
